“I have a total irreverence for anything connected with society except that which makes the roads safer, the beer stronger, the food cheaper and the old men and old women warmer in the winter and happier in the summer.”

This year, much work has been inspired by the genius of #BrendanBehan. Larry Kirwan of Black Forty Seven, who appeared recently on the #podcast, has a forthcoming musical on the author's life called The Catacombs

3) Social Media will be thick with #BrendanBehan anecdotes and images on this centenary day
STOP and do yourself a favor, and give a listen to Donal Fallon’s Three Castles Burning. His latest on Brendan Behan, the first stanza in a two part effort, is as masterful a piece of the #podcast and audio arts form that you’ll likely encounter
Fallon, IMHO is now #Dublin’s preeminent chronicler of the city and its denizens. Not to be missed

The good, the bad, the complex. On his centenary I wanted to share a portrait of #BrendanBehan my Grandfather Tom painted as a wedding present for Behan. I first heard of him in family anecdotes when I was young, and his life and legend have fascinated me ever since. A few years ago I wrote about Behan's pint glass for the Unknown Armies TTRPG 2nd Edition and what might happen if you drank from it today... Happy Birthday Brendan!
Brendan Behan (Breandán Ó Beacháin) was born a hundred years ago on 9 February 1923 in the inner city of Dublin at Holles Street Hospital to Kathleen and Stephen Behan. The family were educated working-class Republican. Brendan was an Irish poet, short story writer, novelist, playwright, and Irish Republican activist who wrote in both English and Irish.

This arrived today...
The 2023 Bohemians jersey
48 hrs after it's release...shipped from Dublin to SW Ohio, amazing turnaround...
the Boh's shop is on the ball!
Love the tribute to Boh's legend, Derek "Mono" Monaghan, who passed away this year and the nod to our neighbor Mountjoy...with Brendan Behan's "the ould triangle" from his play...The Quare Fella.

My favourite Behan line, though it's from Borstal Boy rather than The Quare Fellow.
"The Bible was a consolation to a fellow alone in the old cell. The lovely thin paper with a bit of mattress stuffing in it, if you could get a match, was as good a smoke as I ever tasted."

Today is the 68th anniversary of the 1st performance of Brendan Behan's debut play "The Quare Fellow" in Dublin. I've never seen it performed, but I've read it a couple of times and it left a deep impression.
Whether the general subversive tone...
"What's a crook, only a businessman without a shop."
... or the specific critique of capital punishment that shapes the play, it's never less than thought-provoking and often quite affecting. Recommended.
Brendan Behan's first play, the Quare Fellow first performed at the Pike Theatre, Dublin on 19th November 1954.
