Telling them no replacement unless under warranty is a recipe for people to go elsewhere. Also, who was RESPONSIBLE for QA as someone truly screwed up.

Changed memory settings to conservative ones and tried again, which worked, but after next reboot it didn't boot up again and CMOS reset, etc. all failed.

SSH in and upload an initramfs image, set to boot from that, boot from that.
Upload and install snapshot image.
Success!
Unbox second one.
Forget the initramfs image.

Yup, the #DLink DIR-645 is #bricked by my attempt to install #OpenWRT. I tried plugging it into my #Windows #laptop and saw the same behaviour: up for an #augenblick, then down. Repeat about every 15 seconds.
Last chance: do the #hardreset the D-Link manual describes. AFAIK, though, that *doesn't* reset to the "#factory" #firmware from some #ROM, but just clears any config #SRAM or the like. So it'll still be broken #OpenWRT.
Or am I wrong?
