It stumped me for a moment, but I realised why: for as long as I remember, Art Garfunkel’s #BrightEyes reduced me to tears. I find it so incredibly sad and beautiful.
I reacted this way to a lot of things as a kid, most of which I grew out of. This one stuck, though; it’s dissuaded me from ever seeing the movie.

Her take on “Lua”, the Bright Eyes song from 2004, is again a very stripped-down version with mainly one guitar and two voices, later a piano sneaking in to make the whole thing even more captivating.

#NowListening to #ImWideAwakeItsMorning by #BrightEyes, the fourth offering included in this week’s #VinylMePlease bundle.
This is an album that I know well & love. I’ve other pressings with which to compare (incl. the 2005 #BernieGrundman cut). To my ears, the #VMP wins out: more dynamic with greater depth. The 2005 cut always struck me as a little flat.
The album itself is a modern classic imo - #FirstDayOfMyLife & #Lua are both stunningly good.

#NowPlaying #MoreAdventurous by #RiloKiley. I saw the band on release supporting #BrightEyes & #JennyLewis was just transcendent.
This is my favourite RK album. The opening 3 tracks, It’s A Hit, Does She Love You, & Portions for Foxes takes some beating: ‘There’s been blood in my mouth / I’ve been biting my tongue all week.’
This is an OG & the pressing is a crappy as hell. However, beneath the occasional crackle, there is punch a plenty.

Bank Holiday Monday & I’m #NowPlaying #UpsideDownMountain by #ConorOberst. This 2014 release was weirdly overlooked. It’s a double album with contributions from #FirstAidKit, #MikeMogis, #NateWalcott, & #MWard, among others.
#TimeForgot, #HundredsOfWays, & #EnolaGay are close to peak Oberst (post-#BrightEyes).
This is an OG EU pressing, mastered by #BobLudwig & as is generally the case with Oberst, it’s flawless, dynamic, & well presented.

It’s so unspeakably cold today that I’d decided to go crazy, fired up the central heating & the gas fire. I’ve blown my monthly utilities budget, but the most recent #album by #BrightEyes, #DownInTheWeedsWhereTheWorldOnceWas, #CormacMcCarthy’s latest novel, #ThePassenger, & an ice cold Old Fashioned made with #Saczerac is making it all go down smoother than it ought.
And the song #ForcedConvalescence is a banger with real bite.

#Listening to #BetterOblivionCommunityCentre. Despite being a big fan of #ConorOberst (and, in particular, his work with #BrightEyes) this took quite a while to grow on me. Whilst I still think it falls short his best work, Dylan Thomas kicks everything into gear, Forest Lawn is clever and with a sweet hook, and Service Road is just heartbreaking.
