DISTANT VOICES, STILL LIVES
Literally years of my life have been spent taking in the moving image. Television and (especially) film. My memories of what I've watched are strangely as real to me as those in my day to day life in the material world. Sometimes they feel more real. Terence Davies' Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988), left such an impact on me. And this sequence in particular.

THIS HAPPY BREED (’44): Another in the “David Lean films Noel Coward” series. No surprise, another excellent one. Story of a British family spanning the two decades between the wars, with episodes of family joy and strife intermixed with political/war commentary. Love how the Technicolor looks. There are two genuinely moving moments- the news of a couple’s death, the return of the wayward daughter- that had me choked up with how they were handled. For those alone, this is worth it. #britishfilm

Creep (Christopher Smith, 2004). The obvious thing to do, with regards Creep, is invite comparison with Death Line (Gary Sherman, 1972). But, given that the film is located, chronologically, between the 2002 titles, 28 Days Later (Danny Boyle, 2002) or Dog Soldiers (Neil Marshall, 2002) and the The Descent (Neil Marshall, 2005), it is fair to acknowledge the importance of Creep as a key title of the British Horror Revival! And—It's not bad!

Films that really deserve a Blu-ray release #11:
Take an Easy Ride (Kenneth F. Rowles, 1976). A British public information film, a cautionary tale about the dangers of hitchhiking or an exploitation roughie. This eccentric short could be described as a strange and fascinating combination of all three. As with films Duane Esper, it seeks to deliver sleazy thrills from what it pretends to condemn. A perfect Flipside candidate.

YIELD TO THE NIGHT (’56): Absolutely sensational and intense drama with Diana Dors as a convicted murderer awaiting her execution, flashing back to how she got there as the clock slowly ticks down. Starkly (and stylishly) photographed, which itself is a big contributor to the atmosphere. Dors’ performance is top-notch and moving. Powerful gut punch ending. Highly recommended (and on #CriterionChannel in their British Noir series, though much less a noir than a crime drama). #britishfilm

Much to my disappointment, all this talk of #Threads is not related to the apocalyptic 1984 #NuclearWar #drama.

POOL OF LONDON (’51): Very good British #filmnoir of two sailors on leave who get mixed up (one intentionally, the other not) in a jewel theft gone wrong. Notable for including a very early portrayal of interracial romance, which was (in my view anyway) treated a lot more matter-of-factly than you might expect (or at least that I expected). This really gets going in the third act, as the moody photography is cranked up and the agony of pending decisions comes to a head. #britishfilm
