Sat down in office next to my coworker and she gives me a double take and squeaked out “did you put chips inside your sandwich?”

I indulged her with some knowledge that it’s a British thing and she should try it out.

And she did, she said it was a game changer.

/Bread and Butter: Cakes and Bakes from Granny's Stove / Ciara McLaughlin

A quick look at this cookbook too. I didn't connect well with this book, which is unusual. At first I was puzzled as to the country (I presumed the US) and how how old Granny was - perhaps a lot younger than me.

It is an Irish book, but very little in the book "speaks" to me of Ireland. A lot of the desserts and pastries are common here too - coconut ice, jam drop biscuits, apple pie, roly poly cake, banana bread, crumbles, scones, lemon meringue pie, madeira cake .....

It may be my lack of knowledge about Irish food, but the Irishness comes through more in the breads and some of the heavier cakes/sweet loaf cakes.

It you are interested, it is available for around $45AU, but check around. I think there are better and cheaper books than this one. The cover is nice, though.

Better books on British food include Dark Rye and Honey Cake, and Oats in the North, Wheat from the South, by Regula Ysewijn. I have reviewed them previously. And best of all they are around $50AU for the pair, if you buy them together (See attached pic)

Just seen today’s , and that’s it, I’m going to have to get some in at our next supermarket shop. Probably cherry flavoured scones, eaten with Morello cherry preserve. And Cornish clotted dream. Scottish me eats scones the Cornish way, cream on top. My husband with a dad from eats them style, jam on top. Traiter haha! But yes, yum.

Ate an incredibly vegetable earlier, and still tasting it. So nothing for it, but whisk up a mixing bowl sized giant serving of . Couldn't decide initially between or flavour, but I reckon strawberry will clobber the curry flavour best.

Inspired by last week's episode of to make Welsh rarebit! Despite the rabbitty name it's actually beer cheese sauce on toast. This recipe was kind of bland at first but really delicious once I added some extra seasoning. Also I accidentally got a stout beer that included coffee and maple syrup but it was still really good! foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-

To be fair to , as a non-resident, it would be easy to point the finger at the English in order to slag about their cuisine, but it would not be fair, would it? 🤔 But why did England subjugate so many countries? 🙄

The English boys were plundering half of the world for only one understandable reason that comes to my mind:
To get away from the homelike dishes and to look into every foreign pot to get better food! 😍 ☺️

Question about British food history.
Have you seen things disappear in your timeline?
I have pleasure in sometimes visiting the site underneath. Some things I know and ate, some I don't even recognize.
Crumpets: I only know the supermarket-versions, not very spectaculair.
Old style English donuts, the ones filled with jam: Sold them myself at first job on Harrogate-station.

This afternoon we did a cookalong using a recipe for from a book belonging to one of ‘s friends. It was good fun!

I work in Bath so usually avoid all things Austen like the plague, but the lemon-heavy mincemeat was delicious.

We spend a week in Düsseldorf, Germany.
VAT-taxes on food have always been much lower than the Netherlands and good food is appreciated by all folks.
Good place to be in general.
We have self-accomodation wherever we go, with the routine of lunching out, diner selfmade or the other way.
No worries about Shropshire for food, we think.
Our budget is not sky-high, so if we can do in 7 days what we could do in 12 days in the past, so we will 🙂

Eating in GB:
It's in those unexpected villages: If there is a church and a pub, there will be a mom&pop-place with delicious homemade pies, soup etc.

An extra thing we experienced, not only GB:
If there are facilities in a town, but hardly any chain-bakery/coffee/burgerplace, it is OK.
