Absolutely fascinating, particularly with regard to (perhaps surprisingly) #BritishHistory and #imperialism, but it has the cold hard steel ring of #truth.

"..the Windrush has taken on mythic proportions, with its name acting as a shorthand means of referring to all Caribbean migrants who came to Britain between 1948 and 1971.
..As we commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Windrush’s mooring and pay tribute to the remarkable Windrush pioneers and the centuries-long history of black Britain, it is imperative to interrogate these myths". #Windrush #migration #BritishHistory #racism #colonialism #Caribbean #BlackHistory

I acknowledge this is A NICHE PULL, so feel free to reblog this around -
Does anyone have any good documentaries or even lecture series about the daily life on the Roman frontier?
Going for in Britain for ease of language, but I'm not going to kick out Gallic or Hisperian borders out of bed either lol. Basically somewhere frontier enough to be a fort, instead of in the middle of Londinium or downtown Rome.
Something that really goes into the domestic history minutiae would be great, especially if it focuses not just on the military forces but also what the civilians around the settlement were doing, too! Also the daily life of a Roman woman would be great - though this may not be easy to find outside of in the middle of Rome, hoping for focus on women's daily life on the romanobritish frontier is probs pushing it a bit.
I don't mind if there's some stuff pitched more towards kids in here too lol, just a sort of solid "here's somebody's day from when they wake up to when they go to sleep" is what I'm looking for. Or honestly a lecture series is fine too!
I'm sure there's tons of books that can fit the bill but, well, brain says no reading book because we gotta multitask. Looking after my dog also says we gotta multitask lol. Ideally something I can listen to is best, especially if it's in more bite-sized format than a long audiobook.
I know this is a long shot but I also feel like there may be a greater than average chance this will cross the eye line of some classicist who will immediately go "oh I know what you need exactly!" so fingers crossed, and thank you all in advance! :boost_ok:
(I'm also trying to think of tags to go here so uhhh #romanhistory #britishhistory that's about all I can think of oh well)
New podcast episode!
Between 1827 and 1832, the Black Joke captured 13 slave ships and freed 3,000 people. This week, we talk to historian A.E. Rooks about the ship, diversity among sailors, gay relationships in the Royal Navy, and Britain’s complicated relationship with the slave trade.

I particularly like the amateur #HorribleHistories style fan video to Pete Coe's excellent cover of Vic Gammon's comic song The Kings and Queens of England.
"Charles II had eleven bastard children and
George III went mad,
Edward VII they thought was Jack the Ripper but
Richard III weren't as bad (as Shakespeare thought he was),
Victoria lay back and thought of England,
Charles I lost his head.
The best thing about the kings and queens of England is
Most of them are dead.
Singing Rule Britannia, Britannia waives the rules,
Kings, Queens, Jacks and knaves and tyrants, cheats and fools."

David Olusoga: The Ties That Bind Us: There is an illusion at the centre of British history that conceals the role of #slavery in building the nation. Here’s how I fell for it
"If you know how a trick is done, if you have peered through the smoke and looked past the mirrors, if you have figured out how the illusion is accomplished, surely you can no longer be fooled by it? Surely?
The smoke-and-mirrors trick I thought I had seen through sits at the centre of British history, how it is generally taught and understood. Like all the best illusions it draws your eye in one direction, away from the details the illusionist does not want you to see. It is carefully designed to frame and delineate our understanding of the past by focusing our attention away from certain linkages and connections."

I have this thing about wartime history, chiefly the whole period running up to 1940. What amazes me is how much information is still out there to find.
This YouTube video is fascinating. You could treat it like an audio podcast if you’re busy. A technical glitch means it really starts about 4 minutes in.
I’m intrigued and fascinated. I hope more information comes to light. Tell me what you think.
