Another podcast rec. This one's an NPR-style podcast, which is usually not my jam (I tend to prefer long-winded conversational podcasts) but the information in this one is too compelling to pass up.
I thought I had more or less understood the depravity of British imperialism. Then I listened to this podcast and realized I knew nothing. Each episode made me so spitting mad that I had to take a break and stew for a while before I could listen to the next one.
The first episode, covering Tipu Sultan's near-life-size statue of a tiger (Tipu Sultan's emblem) mauling a man in an East India Company uniform, is an excellent place to start.
I can also now recommend a podcast pairing! Listen to the Best.Named.Dog.Ever episode of Stuff the British Stole, and then follow it up with the Gordon of Khartoum episode of Bad Gays--to hear in his own words how he felt about looting and destroying the old Summer Palace (he was upset they didn't have time to loot it more carefully! Fuck the British!!)

The Black freedom fighters of the Lesser Antilles became known as “brigands” during the french revolution. Their fascinating story has never been written, perhaps because they have been dismissed as runaway slaves in a state of insurrection. The author believed that history has been unfair to the “brigands”. He felt indebted to them for sparing the life of his great-great-great-grandmother who was left in their care when the rest of the Devaux family fled to Martinique for safety. His gratitude motivated him to attempt to exonerate the “brigands” from the stigma of their history and present them in a different light, as freedom fighters caught up in a desperate situation.
