Final bird nerds of 2022; first went to the reservoir, which was frozen over, and then headed down to Aberdeen harbour & Greyhope Bay.
This was the year I really got into birdwatching at last and I’ve loved every second of it 🖤 Here’s to more time in the presence of feathered friends in 2023.

Been looking back at some of my favourite photos I took this year but didn’t end up sharing anywhere. This reed bunting was perched in the tops of trees, singing & posing like a pro.

I’m missing taking photos of birds. My camera has a viewfinder focus issue, which means I have no clue what’s in focus so it’s near impossible to get an in focus shot of anything that moves. Wasn’t planning on buying a new (secondhand) camera just yet 😬

A newly emerged Silver-studded Blue butterfly with its entourage of Lasius ants.

After crawling from the ant nest in which it pupated, the butterfly continues to have worker ants in attendance throughout the vulnerable process of expanding its wings. It's very cool finding them covered in ants like this!

The chrysalis of a Silver-studded Blue butterfly with Lasius ants attending to it. The caterpillars pupate inside or near to ant nests, often with multiple chrysalises lodging together in the same nest.

Following on from yesterday, here's a Silver-studded Blue caterpillar with its posse of Lasius niger ants in attendance. These ants continually escort the caterpillar everywhere it goes, protecting it from predators and milking the honeydew that it produces.
