: In beliefs, the Noz ([byɡylˈnoːs] "Night Shepherd") is a fairy spirit who lives in the woodlands of . He is the last of his kind and is said to be incredibly ugly, which causes him distress. His appearance is so awful that even woodland animals avoid him, and he sometimes cries out to warn humans of his approach, so that he won't frighten them. Though not malicious (indeed, rather kind and gentle), he is always alone because of his hideous visage.
In Anatole Le Braz` mention the Bugul Noz seems less frightening in appearance. Rather than being a spirit to be feared he might, "fulfill a beneficial office, in warning human beings, by his coming that night is not made for lingering in the fields or on the roads, but for shutting oneself in behind closed doors and going to sleep. This shepherd of the shades would then be, take it altogether, a kind of good shepherd. It is to ensure our rest and safety, to withdraw us from excesses of toil and the snares of night, that he compels us, thoughtless sheep, to return quickly to the fold."

The last travel photo I posted was from Dinan, Bretagne. On to Pointe du Raz, essentially the end of the world in Western France and 72 meters up. As you got close, there wasn't much there and the views of the ocean were stunning. But nearby there was a little hotel in the middle of nowhere. Turn the other way, frankly, and this area was a lot more developed, but...good to dream.

We parked at an aire east of the centre of & an easy 8k of along the river (shared with lots of runners) had us surrounded by beautiful boulevards reminiscent of Paris streets, spacious public squares lined with colourful half-timbered buildings, and busy cafés spilling over with people. The city had a wonderful buzz, with cathedrals, fairgrounds, shopping streets & market-stalled plazas. It all felt quite the contrast from our previous beach-centered life.

The largest collection of standing stones in the world, and utterly haunting and awe-inspiring: les alignements de Carnac in Brittany. Over 3,000 of them, perhaps as much as 7,000 years old. These photos are from a trip there yesterday. I’ve wanted to see them for a long time and had my tiny mind blown. What a spectacularly beautiful and mysterious place it is.

We said au revoir to the coast to start our return home, making our first stop on the shores of Anse de Landroanec, near Guerlédan. After a short walk N fancied a & enjoyed a lovely (& warm, 23dC) 1.2k as I watched on. Early the next morning we both had a wonderful 600m pre-breakfast swim, the water so still & smooth after choppy, salty seas - what a way to kickstart a morning. Soon we were on the road heading for our first visit to the Breton capital.

This is a picture of Dinan in Brittany. I kept waiting for the people to clear off of this well known street. Then, I realized the old couple struggling up the steep hill made the shot. Now, I might be old enough to struggle too. 😁 (I actually won a small contest with this.)

It rained all evening, so we spent no time on Plage de Pors Péron. Instead we made our way to , found a campsite & walked to town. Very nice marinas on our approach
After lunch we went to check out all the local beaches, Sables Blanches to Riz, before deciding that Plage des Dames was our favourite. We plopped down on the sand, had a with lots of fishes and enjoyed some sun before the weather turned wet again.

We drove north & west to Pointe de Brezellac, on the northern edge of Beuzec Cap-Sizun. We walked (& jogged parts of) the beautiful coastline path to Plage de Théolen. After a brief paddle in the cool sea we continued on to the headland at Pointe de Van and visited the little Chapelle Saint-They, before returning by the same route - a 14k round trip. Later, we drank a bottle of red and watched the matching sunset; loving this rugged, rocky coast.

The next morning was glorious. After breakfast I went for a 12k run into Loctudy, returning along the coast to Les Sables Blancs to meet Nicky who was just completing her morning 2k sea . We then spent a blissful afternoon of reading, dipping and people-watching on the beach as the tide slowly receded far out into the bay, uncovering previously unseen rocks.

„In 18th century , winds were said to have been blown by mountain-dwelling giants, such as Norouas, the northwest wind, and Surouas, the southwest wind. Tales of lost livelihoods caused by such indifferent creatures show that they could, at times, show great kindness towards their human victims by making amends for lost crops or carrying people on their back across mighty seas but also great cruelty. In northern Brittany, on the approach of a storm, children were once told that if they did not hasten to take refuge inside their home, they were exposed to see, between the sky and the earth to the west, the silhouette of a female black giant.“
