Mocking both nosiness men and know-it-all contemporaries by highlighting big noses:

In this German #broadside of mid seventeenth-century, King Nose is holding his scepter with noses on it, informs you about nose related stuff. He even wants you bring and show your big noses to the kingdom's "Nasenkammer", the textual part says. Moreover: the readers are ordered to get their noses registered at the royal chamber of noses. Bonus feature: a mock seal.

Powerful images do often become media echoes. This media echo started in 1545 on a #broadside and shows the #Reformation in a nutshell. It was reprinted and variated into the seventeenth century. Sometimes the print was colored to sell for a higher price. #histodons

What makes this image special? You see Pope Paul III holding a flaming papal bull, belching forth sulphur, and the audience is farting towards him, shouting: Here are the lips made to measure for the foot of the Pope.

Let's start with the words and objects in the seller's left hand. He is holding a full sheet of paper with the words "Relation. Relation." on it. If a full sheet of paper is printed only on one side, we speak of a #broadside (print) or a broadsheet - #Einblattdruck in German.

Because oral, handwritten and printed news had many names and forms in early modern Europe, from avviso to gazette to zeitungen etc. "Relation" was one of these words used for news in German speaking Europe.

Two pairs of eye glasses talking to each other about the #ThirtyYearsWar on a #broadside published in Germany in 1621/22.

The giant pair of glasses is easy to spot in the image part of the print, and represents the city of #Prague and the Catholic party of the contemporary conflict. The giant pair of glasses is used as a visual guide to look into Prague, its fate in 1621, and the then victorious Catholics.

Someone cut out an image from a German #broadside of the 1620s. This image shows #Luther, on the left, on the right is #Calvin, and the guy in the middle is the Pope. The fun is in the details, #histodons: Luther holds a book titled “Contra Calvinus”. And Calvin holds a book titled “Contra Lutherus”. The Pope, framed by the Protestant disagreeing leaders, is being attacked by both Luther and Calvin: they grab his hair and push down the tiara. Someone liked or hated this image very much.
