Ferrywood Broch mound and surronding
https://canmore.org.uk/site/5013/ferry-wood
Its very hard to see a broch shape in this mound and work out whats broch walling or whats rubble or later walling ,I first visited it in summer when its even harder as theres higher grasses and bracken
#brochs #scotland #archaeology #sutherland #history
#Brochs #Scotland #History #archeology .This is the second smaller mound I wondered if anyone had ideas about ,its small for a broch but the right shape it seems to have a guard chamber type shape along a passageway shaped hollow and seems to have stonework burried in it ,but it could maybe be a round cairn or old sheep pen .I got photos of some exposed stonework under tree roots ,its also marked as a broch on the OS map.(I cant find any sign of robbed large stones in nearby walls)

Does anyone have any thoughts on this mound the OS map has it down as a broch ,but I lived nr two brochs ,walked past and on one most days ,this doesnt look broch like to me,more like a long cairn ,same stonework too ,theres also a another mound thats marked as a broch within a a few of hundred yards so it seems unlikely there two so close together ,esp as theres others nearby.Theres so sign of inner stones or guard cells and huge stones high up the mound

The inside and the entrances to the Broch at Carn Liath ,it has the ruins of outbuildings which I think one of the Lower Camster Brochs in Caithness also has but that brochs never been excavated

Inside Mousa Broch on the now uninhabited island of Mousa in Shetland. Mousa Broch rises to 13m high and is both magnificent and awe inspiring. It is also by some margin the best preserved of Scotland's 500 or so brochs. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/mousa/mousabroch/index.html

Dun Troddan, one of a pair of #brochs on the Glen Elg peninsula.
The workmanship of these structures is remarkable : they don’t collapse but are ‘quarried’ for building stone.
Why do you think Mousa survives!
Did you know there are three known #brochs in southern Scotland - including the magnificently sited Bow Castle, near Stow? #ScottishBorders #archaeology #scottishhistory

I dont have my own images of the Hill o many Stones ,but its not far from the Grey #cairns of Camster and the Cairn of Get and #hutcircles site at Craggy call and the #lowercamster #standing stones lower camster also has 2 #brochs so I have put a couple of images of both the camster brochs and its standing stone https://www.ancient-scotland.co.uk/site/hill-o-many-stanes

The Glen Elg #Brochs are impressive as well.
Been to Mousa and the location made it impregnable. The entrance 20ft from a cliff edge and a 360 view so nobody was ever going to surprise them. Had a walk round the Island and the Broch was always in view. Very impressed.
🎵Oh I do like a broch beside the seaside,
