JWST Accidentally Found 21 Brown Dwarfs

JWST is the most powerful telescope ever built by humanity, and it's scanning into the very limits of the observable Universe to see the first galaxies coming together. However, as part of several galactic surveys, astronomers have already identified 21 brown dwarf candidates in the data, much closer to home. Some are as close as around 325 light-years, others as far as 13,700 light-years - farther than any brown dwarfs discovered. Quite a handy side-benefit.

Radio interferometric observations of the LSR J1835+3259 reveal an extended with a morphology compatible with the presence of a , similar to that of Jupiter and Earth: arxiv.org/abs/2303.06453 - radio emitting ultracool dwarfs may behave as scaled up versions of Jupiter, validating the connection between dipole-ordered magnetic fields and the presence of belt-like morphologies and aurorae beyond our Solar System.

Astronomers have photographed a brown dwarf orbiting HIP 21152, a young sun-like star in the Hyades Cluster.

The newly found brown dwarf called HIP 21152 B, is the first confirmed substellar companion of a main sequence star in Hyades discovered via direct imaging.

Its mass is between 22–36 masses.

Brown dwarfs were first called 'black dwarfs, but none of that really matters as they're actually red.
