A backlit photo of a brown thrasher (Toxostoma rufum) in Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. These are relatively common, but very shy birds. I often seen 6-10 of them on trips to JBWR, but they usually fly into the bushes as soon as they can see a human.

I'm usually hiding.

This brown thrasher (Toxostoma rufum) came pretty close. I've photographed one of these birds before but not as clear. The first bird was on the forest floor in the shadows, and I barely noticed. The camo is pretty effective. I found the below quoted paragraph interesting because there are many brown headed cowbirds around here.

"Brown Thrashers are the largest common host of parasitic Brown-headed Cowbirds. The thrashers do put up some resistance, often rejecting cowbird eggs that are laid in their nests." - allaboutbirds.org

Brown Thrasher

I love when I'm looking through photos that I've taken and find a bird I didn't know I had.

"It can be tricky to glimpse a Brown Thrasher in a tangled mass of shrubbery, and once you do you may wonder how such a boldly patterned, gangly bird could stay so hidden. Brown Thrashers wear a somewhat severe expression thanks to their heavy, slightly downcurved bill and staring yellow eyes, ... " - allaboutbirds.org
