He believed flowers should be painted alla prima (live specimens) & he was among the 1st to paint #Garlands. A friend of Peter Paul #Rubens, Jan's nicknames were "Velvet" or "Flower" because his brushwork was so delicate.

He once challenged Cardinal Federico #Borromeo on the beauty of #Flowers in a letter,

"Your excellency must judge for himself if the flowers do not surpass #Gold &

Mentioned in @flemingrut 's #Advent, this #Brueghel painting "The Census at Bethlehem" depicts the busy-ness of the world into which our Lord Jesus came "incognito". I love how it's set in what was no doubt a contemporary village for the artist.
