The lily is called 百合 in Chinese, which is pronounced as bǎi hé, which has the symbolic meaning of "happy union for one hundred years”. The lily is the flower of love in China, therefor Chinese lilies are great presents for women on their wedding day.

Bamboo has been an important and meaningful subject for painting during many periods in Chinese history.
The Chinese often compare bamboo to gentleman for its unique character of being neither cringing nor arrogant. Furthermore, bamboo painting is symbolic of self-effacing, integrity and safety.

Sparrows have long been a favourite choice to paint with willow or bamboo, probably right back to the Song dynasty when the bird-and-flower genre was invented. They are indeed a cheerful little bird, one that twitters and hops around a lot.

In China the calligraphy always belongs to the painting. It’s like the signature from the artist. The bigger characters are always the title of the painting. The smaller calligraphy shows the name of the artist and sometimes where and when the painting was created.
