Thank you both @uma and @zirias. If Iโve understood the conversation correctly there is a distinct difference of development philosophy that has led to very real technical differences between #GNU/Linux and #BSD. Namely, integrating off-the-shelf parts to build an OS vs custom designing a thing or at least custom tailoring an existing suit for the perfect fit.
1/2
@kaleb_haugen That's a very broad question. First of all, of course, the license. #BSD systems aim to be "really" free, as in, do whatever the f* you want with that code, with very few requirements (like reproduce the original license and copyright *somewhere* in derived products).
But it seems that wasn't your primary interest. So how about that: A #BSD is a whole OS. You might know this "cathedral vs bazaar" picture, BSD is leaning cathedral here. With the whole OS being one single project, there's also governance, planning, release engineering, etc. The result is a well-designed system where everything works together and is well integrated, and breaking changes are well thought off with the whole system in mind.
With #GNU/#Linux, the distributions take the job to build some well-working OS from all the bits and pieces spread over lots of individual projects. If you ever tried to do that yourself, you'll quickly realize the headache ๐
@uma @kaleb_haugen "does not have any kind of upstream code" is not true. Every #BSD system includes *some* software in its base that's pulled from some other party. E.g. #FreeBSD has #OpenZFS, #Heimdal, #LLVM and #OpenSSL in its base, to name just a few.
But then, these aren't just "packaged", they're pulled into the single source repository from which the system is built and care is taken they integrate "perfectly".

Setting aside the nearly religious preferences I know exist; what is the practical difference between #GNU #Linux and #Unix #BSD?
I started with Mandrake in 2001 and lost count of which and how many systems distros Iโve used since then. But the stand outs for me have been #Mandrake, #Fedora, #Suse, #OpenDarwin, and #GNUStep. While there were differences between the systems in terms of hardware and software support I have never grokked what differentiates BSD and GNU.

Good morning to all the #BSD guys/gals ๐
What are you guys working on today? ๐
#ScrewAroundSaturday So I ran a hardening checker on my installation of #opensuse #tumbleweed using #Lynis and received the following results.
I'm curious to see the results from other distros/set ups.

So Iโm waiting for #OpenBSD up and running on @OpenBSDAms ๐. Only instant access to #BSD server give me the chance to learn more about #OpenBSD ecosystem. Also this is good occasion to support OpenBSD Foundation.

I started my #Linux and #BSD journey in 2009 - beginning of the year.
It was fresh, new, and all around a good time - fond memories ๐
I still use #Windows to.
But I can say one thing:
Without #Linux #BSD and #FOSS I would have never grown as a person!
I owe so much to them... so much
I'm jhx (Julian) and I'm still loving #FOSS above everything else - since now almost 15 years ๐

25 years ago today, Google was founded.
On the same day, I wiped Windows 98 off my computer, believing that Debian Linux (which I had been using for a while but still kept Windows on another partition) could do everything I had been doing with Windows until then.
Since that day, many installations of Linux, *BSD, MacOS have graced my computers, but Windows has remained, on a few occasions, only an occasional (unwelcome) guest.
In the spirit of a typical support group phrase, I can joyfully say:
'Hello, I'm Stefano, and I haven't been using Windows as my primary operating system for 25 years.'
Please boost and share your experience!

Dear friends of #BSDCafe and the #Fediverse, I had a few minutes and updated the Wiki page about the technical choices made for the BSD Cafe services (https://wiki.bsd.cafe/bsdcafe-technical-details).
As I mentioned before, I'd love to introduce more BSDs into the setup, either replacing or adding. In the coming days, time permitting, I'll evaluate this further.
In the meantime, the poll on Matrix software has concluded, and the majority of you suggested Synapse. I'm considering setting up a Matrix server for the BSD Cafe, and given the recommendations, I'll likely use Synapse. However, I'll first try it out on some test domains as I'm inexperienced in managing a Matrix server. Stay tuned!
