Friends of #BSDCafe and the #Fediverse, I have a client who's relocating and moving to a different office. I need to set up a simple internal network for them, and the WAN will be a 200Mbit/sec connection. They could repurpose a PCEngines APU (where I'd install OpenBSD or FreeBSD), or I could deploy a small Mikrotik that does everything, including acting as an access point. There won't be any incoming connections since the datacenter is at another location, and I'll connect via Wireguard. I'm leaning towards the first option, but the second is more straightforward and easily replaceable in case of issues. Any advice?

Dear friends of #BSDCafe and the #Fediverse, my post about the Fediverse's 14 million users milestone is gaining some traction, and for a tech person, this calls for server performance analysis 😊.
Overall, I haven't noticed any significant slowdowns, and the load on the FreeBSD VPS where #Mastodon runs, even during high-boost times, remains at these levels:

load averages: 0.19, 0.30, 0.28

FreeBSD proves once again to be a stable and efficient operating system, even in the face of rapid load changes and on limited hardware. Just like all the BSDs!

Dear friends of #BSDCafe and the #Fediverse, I had a few minutes and updated the Wiki page about the technical choices made for the BSD Cafe services (https://wiki.bsd.cafe/bsdcafe-technical-details).
As I mentioned before, I'd love to introduce more BSDs into the setup, either replacing or adding. In the coming days, time permitting, I'll evaluate this further.

In the meantime, the poll on Matrix software has concluded, and the majority of you suggested Synapse. I'm considering setting up a Matrix server for the BSD Cafe, and given the recommendations, I'll likely use Synapse. However, I'll first try it out on some test domains as I'm inexperienced in managing a Matrix server. Stay tuned!

Friends of #BSDCafe and #Fediverse, tomorrow will be another busy day and I won't be able to accomplish many of the things I'd like. Over the weekend, I'm planning to run installation tests of different BSDs on the old MacBook Pro (still tucked away). I'll also give Xen another shot on #FreeBSD and #NetBSD. Planning some comparative tests with #bhyve. I have a few #xcp-ng setups that have proven quite reliable. Time to give it another go on the BSDs.

Friends of #BSDCafe and #Fediverse, today has been a day full of emotions.
I drove for hours in heavy rain, there have been joys and pains, excitement and sadness, as well as a couple of Windows VMs that decided to freeze just while I was in the rain but I managed to brutally restart them.

Tomorrow morning, I'll need to set up a small file server and I'm considering which #BSD to use. I won't have many resources, so #ZFS is out of the options. I'll weigh between #NetBSD - the cooler night will hopefully bring me clarity.

Taking a break on this long day that started hours ago, I was reflecting on the value of #Firefox. I've been using it for many years (since the first version) and often, like now, it's my primary browser. The way it syncs across devices is excellent. With #Safari, tab syncing occasionally breaks and doesn't work for days. Firefox has never missed a beat, and it works perfectly even on #BSD.

The article I published this morning on the old #NetBSD server is gaining some traction, which pleases me greatly.

#NetBSD is a top-notch operating system and deserves more recognition.

In the interest of fairness, I'd like to diversify the operating systems for the services of BSD Cafe, aiming to utilize them all. This will mean moving from using just jails to full-blown VMs. I'll ponder over this in the upcoming days.

Meanwhile, today we're touring our beautiful Ferrara, and it's the Ferrara Buskers Festival, the street performers' festival. It's still quite warm, but more bearable today. Wishing you a continued pleasant day!

It's Saturday evening in Italy, and the temperature is still at 31°C. A blazingly hot end-of-summer night.
The week was long, warm, demanding, yet fulfilling, and I'm closing it with optimism.
Today, we also assisted my father-in-law, who, at 72, is still fully active on his farm. We helped him with trucks that came to load sugar beets.
For someone like me, with a tech-oriented, cerebral job and passion, returning to the countryside and nature is therapeutic, even in this heat and humidity.

So, I'm virtually offering a cold beer, some fine Italian wine (or whatever you prefer, alcoholic or not) here at the BSD Cafe to all the friends from both #BSDCafe and #Fediverse.
Because we're all here, now, in this non-place filled with people, content, and freedom.

A little while ago, I submitted the description of BSD Cafe for the next #FreeBSD quarterly status report. Now, I'm waiting for feedback.

Today, very high #temperatures are expected here, and the humidity is currently at 82%, with temperatures already over 30 degrees. For this reason, I'm not sure I'll be at the computer much; I might take the opportunity to do some work on the garage, where it's definitely cooler.

Tomorrow, a strong wave of bad weather will arrive, and temperatures will drop by 20 degrees. Unfortunately, extreme weather is predicted throughout Northern Italy, and I'm worried as I have commitments outside on both Monday and Tuesday.

I'll probably add some content to the #wiki later. Have a great day and a wonderful #weekend!

today has been another fairly busy day, but fortunately, less so than yesterday. I managed to get some practice with the #drone and took a few videos.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to get back to work on the #Wiki and on #Miniflux (it's ready and functional), so we can finally have an additional service (Miniflux) and a hub for services and articles (Wiki).

Dear friends from #BSDCafe and the #Fediverse, today marks one month since the public announcement of the beginning of the BSD Cafe project.
The results have exceeded my expectations: we now have around 80 active users (some signed up but deleted their accounts after a few days, and I had to handle a few problematic ones - otherwise we'd be more or less 90).

There are several bots up & running (also quite popular), and the poll for the #RSS reader just ended - #Miniflux won, but I suspected it and had already prepared everything in anticipation.

Soon, I'll be launching the #wiki, which will also include instructions and details about other services. BSD Cafe, in fact, won't just be this instance, but a series of services and tools (#BSD based).
