One of my favorite posters. It's an original AnimEigo promotional poster for #BubblegumCrisis. I bought it about 20 years ago at an #Anime convention.

I was very happy when I took it to get it matted and framed. The matting i chose was black but when cut at an angle would expose a red core which matched the font of the poster.

One of my pet peeves in #compositing is glow and how to make it look real.

Here are stills from animated shows I've posted about recently. #BubblegumCrisis is from the 1980s and its glow effects look 🌟 amazing. I assume they made animation like everybody else back then: photograph each painted cel on film. Did they shine light through mattes and do double exposures? I honestly don't know.
#VoxMachina's glow on the other hand... meh. It's just like an outline or a preset.

Fell into the youtube rabbit hole of "awesome 80s cyberpunk anime" and got reminded of #BubblegumCrisis! I didn't see it when it originally came out but I remember it as one of my favourites when I watched anime in the late 1990s. There's a "35th anniversary" tribute on youtube and wow, most of the animation still holds up today.

Is there a modern show that captures that 80's style of pre-iPhone mecha technology, speed lines and smoke trails in CGI without looking like simple cell-shading?

I was recommended the #anime #BubblegumCrisis a while back and watched a bit of it.

It's from the late 80s/early 90s so the animation is very charming. I wouldn't be surprised if #Cyberpunk Edgerunners was heavily inspired by it.

But holy hell, the music is such a fucking vibe. Reminds me of Blondie or some of the later #80s tracks of Girlschool mixed with OG retrowave. And the lyrics have such a melancholic feel.

second was #AlAmarja by Night, my bonkers #OverTheEdge/#WorldOfDarkness/#DarkConspiracy crossover that I ran using #Storyteller rules, snagging fuel from assorted horror and conspiracy rpgs, Usenet & AOL textfiles, and independent local weeklies. our Al Amarja had vampires, risen, werefelines, alien abductee cyborgs, and boomers from #BubblegumCrisis. (which i still haven't seen, though i scored the vintage DVDs at Goodwill last month.)

campaign pitch from 2011: #cyberpunk mecha vigilantes vs superhuman street gangs, using #BubblegumCrisis & #Champions: New Millennium, which somehow share a set of mechanics.

in 2022 i might not use #Fuzion to do this. or maybe i would, for extra powerful 1990s flavor! also i scored vintage Bubblegum Crisis dvds at the local Goodwill this week for $6.

I am curious about how people's different paths to cyberpunk shape their view of the genre. Personally, I went the Neuromancer > Shadowrun > The Matrix route, but I can see people's view of the subgenre being very different if you started with #Akira or #BubblegumCrisis.
