I learned a lot from this paper as a preprint, now it's finally out: Davey Tomlinson, Limiting the Scope of the Neither-One-Nor-Many Argument: The Nirākāravādin's Defense of Consciousness and Pleasure. Enjoy! https://www.academia.edu/79605618/Limiting_the_Scope_of_the_Neither_One_Nor_Many_Argument_The_Nir%C4%81k%C4%81rav%C4%81dins_Defense_of_Consciousness_and_Pleasure #BuddhistPhilosophy
The use of the term "consciousness" in discussing ancient Buddhist discourses is a Whiggish anachronism, in which we imagine ancient Indians to just be primitive versions of, and precursors to, ourselves rather than a distinctive culture in their own right.

My 600th post on Jayarava's Raves has just gone live.
Does Buddhism Provide Good Explanations? http://jayarava.blogspot.com/2022/12/does-buddhism-provide-good-explanations.html
This one is about explanations, what makes a good #explanation and whether #Buddhism has any good explanations to offer.
TL:DR Most Buddhist explanations are not good explanations (for me).

This is an old paper of mine in which I delve into the Buddhist viewpoint on the function(s) of saññā (recognition), which according to the Suttapiṭaka is a particular "moment" or element of the perceptual activity. Here I examine also its dynamic relation with vedanā (sensation) and viññāṇa (consciousness).
Perhaps someone in the community is interested in this stuff...

Testing the system here with a pointer to a new publication that appeared in a series I'm editing at the Austrian Academy of Sciences Press: Tom J. F. Tillemans, "Views from Tibet : Studies on Tibetan Buddhist Logic, the Philosophy of the Middle, and the Indigenous Grammatico-Linguistic Tradition". A collection of previously published and revised articles, plus one new chapter.
