The big triumph tonight is being semi-successful in teasing the bud to unroll onto some filthy plasticine without tearing. It's not perfectly flat so you can accurately see the shape, but you can see more than when the bud scale is tightly curled, the way it comes off the bud cone.

I can't believe how tired & in pain (ergonomically) I am just from dissecting and imaging (and drawing, once) a single dormant vegetative bud. I'm not even all the way through it yet.

I cut an epicormic shoot off the tree, but didn't notice at the time that the tip was dying from something. So this floral bud was frozen in development a week or two back.
