Last year, an 18 year old white supremacist drove from Ohio to this black neighborhood in Buffalo and killed ten people. Their crime? Being black and the subject of hate and derision from the racist radical right that teach people to hate and spur them to violence.

Next time you go shopping, just stand in the parking lot for a second and imagine the sounds of gunfire and screams and sirens. And imagine going to that same supermarket weeks and months and years later, reminded each time of the day that hate descended upon your neighborhood and took the lives of people just going about their business.

We arrive in Buffalo just as the 40th annual Taste of Buffalo food festival is going on.

The streets of the heart of downtown are filled with people eating and drinking thanks to the dozens of local food vendors here. The backdrop is the beautiful Art Deco city hall and other beautiful buildings from when Buffalo was a bustling steel and automobile town of half a million people. Like many industrial cities, Buffalo fell on hard times in the 1970s and is just now starting to bounce back.

Buffalo still has it challenges. It's one of the poorest and deeply segregated cities the country. But on this day, people of all races and nationalities (there is a growing Bangladeshi community here) walk and mingle and eat and drink together and give a glimpse of what Buffalo looks like with its best foot forward.
