Going to the Buliding Physics Forum in Melbourne on 13 September. I love physics but NGL, I also love the food opportunities in #Melbourne π #BuildingScience
@samloonie You can see the gaps here, the gaps will be impossible to see on reflected surfaces. #BuildingScience
Teaching this morning at architecture school. Daylighting: it's all about WINDOWS. It's sobering to think of how many things to consider when designing windows... daylight, ventilation/infiltration and thermal performance. Also did an intro into the Australian building code and how it works. #BuildingScience #Architecture

If you are building a house, choose your weathertightness membrane wisely. I have seen too many (new) houses full of mould. If you have questions, HMU. #BuildingScience
Starting a new project tomorrow testing a design for small podlike homeless shelters to be built later this year in #Launceston #architecture #BuildingScience

I ended up spending one entire hour drawing ONE building detail in Archicad. I HATE the coloured pens and weird thicknesses that come as default in the building composites. I cannot make anything ugly. #CAD #designer #BuildingScience

Today is the day I start doing my hygrothermal simulations. It's taken me MONTHS to collate all the climate data so I can do this. It feels like I'm conducting the opening night of an orchestral debut π This part of research is the icing on the cake. After simulations, I will go back into hard work mode. Writing it all up! #BuildingScience #work #PhDLife

Comparing synthetic rain data with observed data for Perth today. I'm not an expert at synthesising data, so I have partnered with an industry specialist who makes this data. However, I am expert at assessing the quality of climate data for hygrothermal simulation. Win-win for both of us - I will publish this so they'll get validation and I get synthetic data for all the missing data months. #climateData #work #buildingScience #Python

Watching UCL conference again tonight, it has just kicked off with a keynote about thermal insulation, climate change and mould growth risk within timber framed walls #BuildingScience
I was in the paper yesterday. Its really sad that do many people in my state suffer with cold homes ππ’ #BuildingScience
Sunday night, getting ready for the week. Packing the car for a site visit tomorrow to do an #airtightness test on the coast - two hours away #BuildingScience

Changes in zoning for cyclone C1 and C2 categories are linked to climate change leadining to increased building costs in QLD #climateChange #buildingScience

If exposed timber studs show signs of mould growth during construction, the mould must be remediated before it is enclosed in the wall. If not, mould will continue to grow inside the wall #healthyBuildings #ArchitecturalScience #BuildingScience

Some contemporary architectural design elements can let water penetrate the envelope:
- Boxy designs with articulated walls that jut in and out have gutters that are not straight.
- Ledges where wall materials change
- Box gutters without sumps
- Sky lights
- Flat roof
- Balconies
If buildings have these elements, be extra mindful of thoughtful detailing! #healthyBuildings #ArchitecturalScience #BuildingScience

Water damage in buildings cause mould growth. Some people develop Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) where their bodies can't clear the biotoxins found in fungi. #healthyBuildings #ArchitecturalScience #BuildingScience

Another fascinating afternoon writing about #mould, this time, dry rot in structural timbers π€ π Take away from this deep dive, keep your relative humidity below 65% in all your building voids because mould doesn't need water to grow. Sometimes I wonder about my brain... I get so obsessed with little details. #PhDLife #BuildingScience #BuildingGeek
