This is some sort of larger mettalic wood-boring beetle (Buprestidae). This particular one was injured and trying to warm up in the sun.

I was lucky enough to spot this very rarely seen an adult Agrilus ater. Usually all you see are the larvae and their galleries. In some regions the imagos aren't seen for decades because they're hard to spot.
In Germany, the species is in decline and protected.

Another jewel!
This Hardwood Heartwood Buprestid (Texania campestris) Was resting on a bole of a dead tree. The larvae feed in American Beech and Sycamore trees. They are about the beefiest beetle you will come across in north america. I find them to be absolutely gorgeous as well.
