Two #Buran are rotting away in an abandoned hangar in another part of the sprawling Baikonur complex. Over the years, local scavengers have snuck into the hangar to harvest valuable metals and electronics. #otd in 1988, the Soviet Space Shuttle #Buran launched for the first and only time on the giant #Energia rocket. This is the giant rail transporter-erector that was built for the project at the #BaikonurCosmodrome. The 'grasshopper' was pulled by by four railcars and was used to bring the stack to the launch site. I took this picture in 2014 during a visit to Baikonur. But I am pretty sure that those 2700+ tons of steel still sit exactly in the same place today.

I watched Bald and Bankrupt sneak into a secure facility to see the #Buran shuttle from the Soviet Union.... And it just clicked where I've heard the name Buran before.... My Android Gemini browser is called Buran..... I had read about the shuttle yeeeeeeaaaars ago and always thought it was so neat.... Then years passed and I forgot about it until just now...

200 days late but I just found out the #ariane #gemini browser is now closed source and no longer on #fdroid ! Unfortunate but it's their project so…
