Paradoxically, this is the fastest growing big city in the U.S. The old story about frogs in warming water was originally a cautionary tale, but people are arriving I assume even in the middle of the summer. Today is the 24th sequential day that Phoenix has had a high temperature of over 110ºF, + from the forecast it will not be until a wk from today that the figure drops to "only" 106ºF. And until that thirtieth day the lows are projected to remain in the low 90s. In Arizona 85 people as of 2 days ago have suffered severe burns, with pavements heated up to 180ºF, 7 of whom died. Those with burns had first-degree injuries with pain + redness, second-degree wounds with blistering, + third-degree burns requiring skin grafting. For Arizona as a whole, some 257 people [this year to date] had underlying cause of death listed as "exposure to excessive natural heat." For context, from 1970 to 1990, the state lost at average of 16 people per yr from hyperthermia, + the graph shows the perilous trendline. As John Burn-Murdoch stated, "This is not a forecast for 50 years time, it’s happening today." Climate change is real, it's happening now, we are responsible for it + it's time to seriously do something about it.
