"Hasta su abuelo," an etching by Francisco de Goya, Prado Museum, Madrid. Another in the "Sueños" series of dream drawings (see yesterday's DotD 115).

According to the title 'Even unto his grandfather' the donkey is reading a genealogy of his ancestors.

In recent times we have seen various studies suggesting donkey breeding goes back 7,000 years. It is amazing to see Goya humorously playing with donkey genealogy in the 18th century!

On this cold morning, this is a handy little instrument for donkey-keepers: a combined thermometer/ ânemometer.

The thermometer obviously measures temperature (today 3.2 Celsius) and the ânemometer tells you how many of your donkeys are French (zero today which is a normal reading).

Outside the old farmhouse we used to rent, Rubí donkey seen practising with monster-on-wheels following behind.

Unusually, she is wearing a pack saddle for this, while we awaited the arrival of a proper harness.

These days we live beside a mountain road with blind corners and sheer drops, so we no longer use the donkey trap. It is too dangerous when motor traffic or cyclists suddenly appear around the corner, going too fast!

The donkey who wanders into the film about the painter Joaquin Sorolla "Cartas de Sorolla" and is present for three seconds, hidden behind a fountain.

A classic documentary which captures the essence of impressionism, marred by an unexplained burro appearance at 34' 35" into the film.

"The White Donkey" (1912) by Valencian impressionist master Joaquin Sorolla. The setting is La Mancha - with typical manchego-style windmills in the background - in a scene that would have been familiar to Cervantes, the 16th century writer of Don Quixote, whose squire was so fond of his little donkey, Dapple.

2023 marks the centenary of the death of Sorolla and there is a special exhibition of his work in the Museo de Bellas Artes Gravina in Alicante until June.

It is a bright January day but a very cold wind is blowing, so I have put a horse blanket on Matilde because she was coughing. Probably just some straw that went down the wrong way.

A carrot is always essential for donkey photo portraits, but in this case it also adds a neat complementary colour to the blue of the coat!
