More recently, we looked at prevalence on #skinNTDs in school and rural community settings in #Togo (plenty of scabies, occasional cases of #yaws and #buruliulcer, and lots of superficial #fungal disease).

Image on this post shows most common sites around the body where scabies presentations were observed by the dermatologists on this study.

A lot of fungal skin infections, 24% prevalence. Also, 6.1% prevalence of #scabies across these settings. Several cases of #yaws, and the occasional #leprosy and #Buruliulcer case.
And 5% of those with a #skininfection reported associated #stigma.

Buttocks, wrists, and between the fingers the most commons sites, but lesions observed across many body sites. More in supplementary information.

Alert for fellow residents of #Victoria that cases of #BuruliUlcer are becoming more common. The disease is caused by the bacterium #MycobacteriumUlcerans, which can be carried by #possums and spread by #mosquitoes ! Here’s a pic down my #microscope at 200x magnification of a case I just reported this morning. The specimen is a punch biopsy of a leg ulcer with Wade-Fite stain highlighting the organisms in intense dark pink (pale purple background is the necrotic dermis). #pathology
