Masa harina is one of my staple foods for

For porridge, it cooks just as quickly and easily as instant oatmeal, and you can customize it to suit your tastes, make up little packets of different flavors at home

I was watching a video on YouTube the other day that caused me to realize that both Nessmuk (George Washington Sears) and Horace Kephart mention virtually nothing about how to carry significant amounts of while in the . Kephart briefly mentions aluminium canteens and rubber water bladders, but that's about it. I had to get out my copies to re-read them to make sure.

I just finally got around to replacing my ~180 g U-Dig-It stainless steel trowel, which I've had ever since they first came out, with a ~30 g TheTentLab "The Deuce #3", so of course now I can foolishly add another 180 g of weight to my pack πŸ˜… by adding a pot and potlifter.

Solo and with Colin Russell in the wind and rain. A Galloway forest and some cooking.
A wild weather camp deep in the forest, went exploring to look for new spots.

I just realised that my three preferred knives for everyday use, crafting, camping etc are European and also under €35.

Multitool: Victorinox Huntsman (Switzerland)
Pocket knife: Opinel No. 8 Carbon steel (France)
Fixed blade: Morakniv HeavyDuty (Sweden)

(I know the HeavyDuty model is not full tang)

And probably the biggest discretionary area is food, water, and cooking gear.

I don't want to go , but I may have to. The gear definitely has to stay home. No for me, probably not even my trusty GrΓ€nsfors Mini Belt Hatchet.

I am really digging the new Victorinox Venture Pro system, but affording that is not in the cards anytime soon.

My usual gear is a SOTO Amicus cartridge stove and a GSI Outdoors Halulite 1.1L boiler.

I've tried to use MIL-TEC Basic Ripstop poncho as a tarp for my hammock.

It works, even managed to setup it using single 15m rope (without cutting it) or hooks, etc.

This poncho fine for the shade, or to protect from falling acorns :) , but is too small to protect hammocks corners from the rain... πŸ˜• .

Might get a bigger poncho? But I'm not tall... Or bring also a tarp? But that's extra weight...

Any tips?

Some pics of my / kit
(Not technically uk legal carried this way, but can swap the knife out and the axe for a buck saw and uk legal folding knife if needed)

Kit as laid out all lives in dry bags.

Sheet:
- DD 3X3 tarp
Top:
- DD front line hammock and underblanket
- Blackawk! Titan customised

Left:
- Snugpack quilt

Bottom (left to right):
- ridgeline, guylines and tarp kit
- poles for hammock
- ECWCS Gen 1 waterproof jacket
- Handwarmers
- toothpaste
- wet wipes
- med kit
- pot, cup, trangia meths burner, grill
- pot stand
- hobo stove
- Kelly kettle
- firestarter kit
- Spoon
- Fiskars X10 Wood splitting axe
- reading materials and map
- leatherman MUT
- canned food
- soviet canteen
- gps
- compass
- head torch
- running shorts
- spare socks
- spare tshirt
- spare trousers
- gorka jacket

I could use another pair of socks in there, more water, more food, bin bag, trowel and my toothbrush. But you get the gist of it.

All in it comes to about 14kg. I could strip it back by opting for a ultralight waterproof, tent and sleeping bag instead of the hammock, but I feel the hammock setup makes me ready for any weather, and if I'm using a kelly kettle I already want to be near trees, so the hammock seems like the natural choice.

Is there anyone in Australia who makes bedroll covers like this for safely carrying bedding or bulky jackets strapped to your backpack? Otherwise I'll be getting this from Italy.
