After two-year spike, Boundary Waters visits drop to pre-pandemic levels
It'll be interesting to see if this trend happens across all our public lands.
The brand new Sea to Summit 50L Big River Dry Backpack just arrived as a review sample.
I promptly loaded all my camping gear including a BearVault BV500 Journey Bear Canister, which easily fits 10 days of food for a solo paddler with the right packing. It all fits fine with a terrible packing job.
The pack weighs just 1lb 10oz. I'll need a water bottle pocket for the outside.
I suspect this will be my portage pack for the next couple of years.

Next, there’s the mining ads.
Northeastern Minnesota, with its iron ranges, is practically the birthplace of hockey in Minnesota. And mining interests have sponsored state Hockey Tournament TV broadcasts as long as I can remember.
This year’s big mining sponsor is a non-ferrous player. NewRange.

No endorsement implied, but I’ll touch on some issues maybe tomorrow cuz it’s getting late tonight. 🧵 #thread

Lone pine
I spent most of yesterday on the Gunflint Trail. Road conditions up there are icy, but the snow is nice. It's generally solid with a little powder on top. That made snowshoeing off the trails easy. I decided to hike to this little pine tree that I like to photograph. The blue sky was awesome.

Echoes of ’93 – Managing a Complicated Wilderness

A waterfall in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
I've paddled near this and portaged past it several times, but last year was the first time I bushwhacked to it. I was looking for evidence from an illegal dynamite blast from the early 1900s. We found the channel they blasted.

I posted this photo on my Facebook page and mentioned that I still needed to clone out the registration sticker (orange sticker that says 22). I can't stand putting those required $25 stickers on each of my canoes and kayaks.
The comments about digitally removing the sticker ranged from keep it, remove it, to you won't listen to your fans about keeping it. Really wild.
I removed it because it bugs me. :)

I'm so elated about the Boundary Waters being protected, so here's a favorite photo that I took in the BWCAW.

Today in a win for clean water and wild rice, the federal government announced it would implement a 20-year ban on copper-sulfide mining on over 225,000 acres of federal lands surrounding the Boundary Waters.

@bryanhansel A few years ago I was backpacking the #BWCAW. In the middle of the night nature called and I had to get out of the tent. I had forgotten what the night sky is supposed to look like and nearly fell over at the sight of the stars.

With the winter rain in northern Minnesota, it reminded me of something I wrote about the coming climate migration.

If you ever get the chance to visit this jewel of a National Park in upper Northeastern Minnesota, do it.
