Day 24 COMPLEX/SIMPLE

Complex: While Shadowrun is up there, for I'm gonna go with . Specifically playing Rolemaster with all of the splat books. Everyone with their own kind of weird magic, embracing the strangeness.

Simple: Having now run a few games, I understand why is popular as a chassis for various clones. I had fun hacking it and making it my own game. Coming from DnD5e both groups of players through TotSK got used to the procedures quickly.

Favorite game system?

This will come as no shock, but classic D&D. It is in no way, shape or form the perfect system for everything, it isn't even the perfect system for D&D (as if there could be such a thing) but it's such a great system for tinkering with, both on it's own and through the many many retro clones and derivative games that have come out of the OSR.

I never liked back in the day. "Why would I want 'basic' when there's 'advanced'?" I asked myself. Now I know that all the stuff that annoyed me about was mostly just AD&D and WotC-era "innovations".

1E+: The invisibility spell makes a creature invisible until it attacks. Here are 6 paragraphs of legalese to define the precise meaning of "creature", "invisible", & "attack".

BX: You're invisible until you attack. You know damn well what that means! If you don't, ask the DM.

This morning on the way to school, my kid asked me what version of is the "Honor Among Thieves" movie based on. He's only played via so I wasn't sure if I should get into all the editions in the short time we had.

Luckily, he got distracted by telling me about his idea for a druidic lich so I didn't have to explain the tangled mess of OD&D, BX, BECMI, AD&D1E, AD&D2E, 3E, 3.5E, Pathfinder, 4E, 5E...

I'm just getting into solo play, and I'm looking to run a dungeon with OSE + Solo Heroes.

I'm thinking of using B1 In Search of the Unknown, but does anyone have any other recommendations for relatively simple dungeons to run through?

A thieving gnoll stashes ill-gotten gains behind a loose wall stone.
My roll on the Level 3 Unguarded Treasure table (B52) got 800 sp. See if you get better.

From yesterday’s “69. Locked Storeroom,” the Old-School Award goes to all those who guessed GNOLLS. The “barrel of exceptionally fine ale” is from Dungeon Module B2 The Keep on the Borderlands, cave “J. Gnoll Lair,” room 48 (21). ’s ale “is so good, in fact, that there is a 5 in 6 chance per taste that [a PC] will draw a healthy draught and then spend the next 1-4 turns drinking.” He might have at least given us a saving throw.

I may have borrowed the “barrel of exceptionally fine ale” from a famous example. To astute old-school players, the room’s contents may be a clue to what humanoid type inhabits these rough-hewn caves. The next room will do as much for the less attentive of us.

Not a bad location to run a weekly OSE West Marches campaign for kids, right? No complaints here. :)

I LOVE D&D! I have played all the editions but enjoy most those from the previous century. In designing Deep Dungeon Doom, I use the most concise, complete, and (outside of Holmes) curt edition: Moldvay, Cook, and Marsh’s B/X. Old-School Essentials Classic Fantasy is a faithful clone.

Daniel steps through Moldvay to design an Investigating-a-Chaotic-Outpost adventure, inspired by Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness.

@stephenwendell I agree that newer editions (looking at you, 5e) impose checks on nearly everything. And I like being free of that in BX/ , but I still find roll-under ability checks useful in situations involving feats of dexterity, attempts to deceive or persuade, and certain kinds of detection. (Spoiler alert: if the check uses a prime requisite, players roll with (gasp!) advantage.)

The player party, a pair of neophyte adventurers, descended to the Auditorium (2), took the bronze mask from the statue (b), which they then toppled, and opened the brass door to Baal-Dagan’s Prison (9).

How about a little first thing in the ay-em?

The oasis turns out to be a mirage. Touching the illusion breaks it. The visual and auditory effects end. The sudden silence alerts a guardian, who is through the westward opening, south of the fountain.

Considering the cultural tropes in the “Realm of Kubra Kawthar” and this illusion, in sight and sound, as clues, can you guess what this level’s boss monster is?
