#ukpol #byelections Current polls suggest that #labour is likely to win but with a lower probability than was the case for #uxbridgeandsouthruislip - so not exactly a guaranteed result. And the #voterIDrequirements changes are yet to be factored in. So rather uncertain. There may also be a another #byelection in #tamworth if #chrispincher stands down. And presumably eventually #nadinedorries will actually resign although she has spent longer resigning than #liztruss served as prime minister!

There are a couple of council #byelections in #Plymouth this Thursday and my phone tells me I’ve walked 128km delivering leaflets and letters.

At least if people need occasionally to take a “non-compliant” car into London’s LEZ, they can do so for £12.50. In Glasgow now, and coming to Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee, entering the LEZ just once will net you a £100 fine. Penalty vs charge. Rip-off vs expense.

Another key take-away from Thursday's #byelections is the likely importance of #tacticalvoting - if the motive is essentially to #GTTO even among soft #Tory voters, then tactical voting will be a key trend in the next election;

As noted in the prev. post, any new Govt. will likely find its support quite soft & might be pulled in a rightwards direction by the media.

This will further disenfranchise the UK left & stoke further (angry) dissatisfaction with UK #democracy!

Despite how the Tories will spin it, these #byelections clearly promise an utter wipeout for them at the election.
That Labour failed to take Uxbridge does suggest a weakness in Starmer’s support in that the opposition to the Labour London mayor’s ULEZ policy was a decisive issue.
I don’t know if that justifies Starmer’s policy of not doing anything that might alienate the Daily Mail or suggests that Labour should have a more clearly progressive agenda.

Lewis Goodall just described the #Labour victory parade in Selby as looking like Keir Starmer and Angie Rayner had brought their kid to parents' evening. Then later went off at Jonny Mercer for comparing the same Labour candidate to The Inbetweeners.

Looking at these byelection results, it seems to me that the 'swing' is down to Tory-right-or-wrong voters staying at home. They're still there, folks, grinding their teeth over the Daily Mail at the breakfast table.

What stands out for me is the more than 10% Green vote in Somerton and Frome, with zero campaigning, and a tacit endorsement of tactical voting for the LibDems.

The real gut-punch of the Tories holding onto Uxbridge is their immediate use of it to justifying abandoning environmental pledges. Rees-Mogg straight away citing the victory was due to the unpopularity of “high-cost green policies.”

The Conservatives suffered two defeats in the by-elections yesterday. Labour took Selby and Ainsty, and the Liberal Democrats won the Somerton and Frome by-election by more than 11,000 votes. The Tories are upbeat as they blame everybody except themselves.

Ok. Have now recovered. The lesson in this is: with very low turnout, very close results, and all three progressive parties standing against each other, #Tories can still win seats. (If those 893 #Green had gone to #Labour, Tories would have lost).

I am a Green Party member but given where we are at, #FPTP and 13 years of Tory ruin, surely #tacticalvoting is key

So the #Tories management of expectations was bang-on - they held onto Uxbridge but lost the other two seats contested in yesterday's #byelections.

The fact that they could hold on to one out of three (#BorisJohnson's old constituency) is in itself a metric of how warped the UK's #democracy is right now - that the wreckers still have some public support remains pretty depressing!

Today & into the weekend there will now be endless projections of what this all means for the next #election!

Initial turnout figures for two out of the three #byelections tonight - Uxbridge and South Ruislip 46% and Somerton Frome 44%. No figure yet for Selby and Ainsty.

So the Lib Dem’s seem super confident about Somerton & Frome but suddenly Uxbridge is “close”. FFS.
