For those interested in IT project planning and management, here are the slides for my talk “Caught between clarity and flexibility: how to better plan IT and development work” at #c4l23. - https://osf.io/w8yn6
"Clara can attest that just because OCLC [WorldShare] is a vended system doesn't mean she doesn't have to do a lot of work on it" 😂 word.
#c4l23 (catching up)
These ramblings brought to you by #c4l23, and lets get to why code4lib leaves people invigorated and creative.
Workshop on Code4AI https://2023.code4lib.org/workshops/code4ai An intro to what makes AI happen, including an intro to TensorFlow.
Lots of AI talks throughout code4lib, nicely grouped in one session, but there was this that either seemed like an outlier of the group or was f'ing brilliant planning
AMPlifying AV https://2023.code4lib.org/workshops/code4ai wonderful work building a tool (AMP) to help out with transcripts and much more for videos.
So, AI needs training data, not nec. text form, but that's getting the most press.
And a great new tool for extracting text from video.
All conf session are on youtube, so captions there, or use AMP to get another set of captions.
See where this is going?
Challenge: next year's C4L includes an AI generated presentation based on this year's Code4Lib.
GO!
(dammit, I might need to start blogging again)
Reasons to have #c4l24 in Madison, WI:
- Many hotels on the bus routes (plus: bus routes should be revamped by then!)
- Food trucks on library mall
- Very cool libraries, very cool special collections
- I get to sleep in my own bed
Best proposed conference breakout session: “how to defend yourself against a dagger-armed brigand in quattrocento Italy” #c4l23
Substitute Machine Learning for AI in the title and this was a really clear #c4l23 talk about matching MARC data (remember that stuff) using a feedforward neural network:

The human cost of migration... Hurray for the Welsh National Library factoring this in their migration #c4l23
This is a very British way of slagging off Fedora. They have not said anything bad about Fedora. Show me where they have? #c4l23
Enjoying #c4l23 (code4lib.org) conf remotely this week but I'm a little surprised to not see any presenters from public libraries (besides library of Congress).. not fault of organizers, but their absence, I guess, is a result of less capacity of public libraries having less staff with web/ux/tech/software development skills compared to academic libraries. 1/?
scarfing down two leftover fast food tacos drowning in hot sauce an hour before my #c4l23 presentation may not have been my wisest move ever
