Saturday’s #ImageOfTheDay. #Caedmon, the "father of English poetry” is remembered today. Bede says he was an illiterate cowherd who received a divine gift of song at Hild’s monastery at #Whitby and famed for the “Song of Caedmon”, perhaps the earliest surviving poem in Old English. He died after 680.

Here are the ruins of the later Benedictine #WhitbyAbbey‬⁩, approached from the sea. For centuries it has been a landmark for seafarers, standing like a sentinel on the cliffs above the harbour.
