On the Isle of Man, the ny Groamagh (“gloomy old woman”) was a witch who, around , the beginning of spring, went out to gather twigs for her fire. If it was fine and bright, she gathered enough wood to extend the winter, but if weather kept her indoors, she ran through her previously gathered woodpile, and spring came earlier.
