Yuknoom Took' K'awiil, one of the Snake Lords of #Calakmul. 🐍

For generations, his ancestors strove to dominate the #Maya world, using diplomacy and military might to bring smaller cities into their orbit.

Their plans worked -- Calakmul and allies defeated arch rival Tikal in 562 AD. Their dominance lasted >100 years, but eventually #Tikal sought vengeance. 🪓

In 735 AD, Tikal won, capturing a Snake lord. This proud ruler was probably sacrificed by his enemies. ☠️

On top of the world! 😎 Atop the tallest Maya #pyramid in #Mexico. In the distance, you can see one of the other giant pyramids at Calakmul rising above the canopy. 🌳👀

You can currently climb pretty much anything at #Calakmul. But for how much longer?

Construction is underway for the Maya Train, which will carry tourists around the #Yucatan, including to Calakmul. 😮 This isolated site could change dramatically when it becomes accessible by train. 🚂
