OK, it’s 4 AM – such a typical time to end an install :blobmelt:

But it is done …well, the basic install at least of my #EndeavourOS on #Slimbook (on #Btrfs in #LUKS).

I have to say, this was surprisingly painless, thanks to the #Calamares installer.

TL;DR:

• password-protect your BIOS!
• Btrfs + LUKS was super easy
• using GNU #GRUB now, might change to #rEFInd later
• DPS is a thing I need to read more about

I didn't have a live image handy on USB, and I THOUGHT I could modify my encrypted LVM partitions in #Debian #Linux with a console from the Debian installer. Alas, I could not and instead bricked the partition.

I wouldn't have tried this without two full backups.

The process works better with a full live environment in either #Ubuntu or Debian Live.

I reinstalled Debian Bookworm using the live media (and the much-simpler #Calamares installer). Now I have encrypted LVM with one big volume.

This reminds me of a talk I gave at #DebConf 17 about installing #Debian on #ARM based systems and exploring the idea of using a live image for the installer.

Not a new idea, really, and the #Calamares installer by #Mobian used lacks a lot of flexibility that #DebianInstaller provides...

Still, this may be the first time I actually used a live installer for real and perhaps best of all, I did very little of the work!

Just done a #Debian 12 #Bookworm clean install with full disk encryption (including /boot partition, excluding /boot/efi) using the #calamares installer from a #Live #Installer image.

Lesson learned: minimum /root partition should be 15GB (for the #cinnamon flavor), the installer will not prompt you if your install partitions are too small (like 10 GB for the root partition), it will produce vage error messages instead… 🥹😇

Otherwise: a breeze!

We had some rare reports with @manjarolinux 22.0 install medias when we added our new dynamic slideshow to #Calamares. Seems only that slideshow used 900 MB of RAM to display. That is now fixed to have under 2 GB in total used when #Plasma gets installed ...

Last night, I made the switch from the default #anaconda to #calamares installer for the OS. There were some packages that secretly kept it from running

I also got some default #appimages, namely #firefox, #libreoffice, and a fully-set-up-with-theming-and-plugins #neovim, to install. I want this to eventually replace my #dailydriver, and those are tools I use.

I'm running into boot problems with Calamares (of course, I was running into boot problems with Anaconda too), so that's the next thing

20 years installing/using #Debian, I tested 11.6 LXQT yesterday evening ("live" then install).
- still too large for a Live iso : 3.5G vs 1.9G for #LMDE vs 1.6G for MX (fluxbox)
- live boot is boring as it's very slow.
- #Calamares : first time I come accross this installer. Not smart, and the partitioning step is even more tricky than before.
- Once installed (#LXQT), stable but some bugs as well.

Been busy with exams and such, but figured I should do a belated #introduction!

I'm Victor, currently studying at #Cornell University. I'm a big #Linux fan, and recently I've been working on a lot of #NixOS related stuff, including adding the #calamares installer to NixOS 22.05 and working on @snowflakelinux.

have build in #RAID support, to that'll probably be handled by either #LVM or #MDraid, but it also doesn't do checksumming like #Btrfs / #ZFS so you don't know if/when you get bit-rot 🤔

Some articles mention #GRUB supports booting from NILFS2, but an other (possibly a #Calamares bug at the time) did not but provided a workaround.
