I recently got myself a new Android phone. Today I used the #Calculator app for the first time.
Project of the day (day 8) 2023, Wednesday, August 30th
#UCALC : https://github.com/seanpm2001/UCALC/
UCALC is one of my first #Python projects, and is one of my most developed software pieces. It is functional, but currently only works via command line, and is missing a lot of planned features. It is a highly advanced #calculator, with dozens of modes, and support for very complex #mathematical jobs, such as #calculation beyond the computers #processor type (eg: it can do #128bit and higher calculations on a #64bit machine)
Recently, I learned about the new terms Ronnabyte and Quettabyte (along with the smaller units deca (10) and hecto (100) which I didn't add in originally) and I am hoping to update the calculator (and 2 other projects) to include these new units in the near future.
UCALC was originally tested on #Windows 10, but can work on any computer that has a functional Python interpreter. I hope to make it more functional, and eventually add a functional GUI.

I got answers on Usenet:
Some mechanical #calculator. The multiple digits are because there's one of each 0..9 for each power of 10. Operation by turning the crank.
#CashRegisters used to work that way, too.

I was at the Bring and Byte sale at @computermuseum today and all I got was this lousy* #calculator 😄
* It's not lousy at all. Just look at it! Needs a new back cover, but it works and will go nicely with my #TexasInstruments TI-1250
Braun ET66 #calculator modelled in Blender.
Simplified (LCD is one texture, and didn't even try to model the back) and I haven't dared to try UV yet, so these are object textures projected by trial and error transforms.
Now that I'm beyond the absolute basics, I'm definitely learning more by doing projects like these than working through tutorials... and it's also more fun to work towards something you want.

I had never seen this type of paper #calculator table before.

#throwbackThursday to this HP-16C computer scientist #calculator I sold on eBay last year.

@JoeRess @degville Great episode! RPN calculators are the best - I always know the numbers before I know what I need to do with them - have a look at free42 on android/ios. Also fascinating that the old HP's had a bespoke processor which worked with binary-encoded decimal (so 0.3 - 0.2 gives a sensible answer), and also amazing algorithms they used to calculate trig/log functions #calculator
I got this Texas Instruments TI-1250 calculator today which is roughly the same age as me and which belonged to my father. Unfortunately I don't really have a use for it, but I will find a new owner who will appreciate it more than I do. #TI1250 #vintage #calculator

I know there’s got to be a simple command-line way of doing this, but disgusted that because I don’t know it offhand I just spent ten minutes getting LibreOffice to sum a list of times, because ordinary calculator utilities don’t do #sexagesimal. Binary octal hex, yes. Degrees (/hours) minutes seconds, no. It’d almost have been faster with a pencil.
Depressing since the first hardware #calculator I used (in the 70s, and it lasted nearly 30 years) did. (Canon 8T; miss it.)

I am glad to know who is responsible for these #math concepts I take for granted. I got my first #calculator in 7th grade. Our math #teacher warned us not to rely on #calculators because "Sometimes they're wrong!" One of my #CivilEngineering #professors used a #SlideRule to show the importance of understanding the quantities we're working with rather than blindly accepting the results from a #computer. One #typo can lead to disaster. I now have my own slide rule.

Not done a #calculator post for ages, mainly because I've not acquired any calculators recently. Picked this little gem up a couple of weeks ago in a junk shop in #Hastings though. 50p.

This is my dad’s #HP25 #calculator that he still uses! Data entry is reverse Polish notation, of course.
Wanted to show this to Topaz Rabbit @Topaz - he has some really great retro calculator and computer stuff on his profile.

To my knowledge, this is the last mass produced RPN calculator - and it’s itself an homage , not without its problems. Still, a pleasure to use , and the lack of RPN calculators is something that saddens me. #calculator #calculators #hp #retro

On Computable Numbers (Unzurechnungsfähig)
2023 | ausgemusterte Texas Instruments TI-83 Plus Taschenrechner
