From a PG&E wildfire camera on Blue Mountain, Kern County, in the foothills about 30 miles northeast of Bakersfield. Hard to tell, but there appear to be several other California condors roosting nearby.

The wildlife sighting was a reminder that as a conservationist I should always hold on to hope and keep working.

Full disclosure: I'm biased, having worked closely with a number of the section authors, but even so, especially as a transplant to Oregon, the book taught me a lot about the history and current status of ornithology and bird conservation issues in our state. And the art is fabulous.

I was lucky enough to spot California condors while on several hiking trips in Arizona, California, and Utah. They are such mesmerizing, gigantic, beautiful birds. I stitched #54 on this hat and it’s currently for sale in my shop.
