CALIFORNIA SPLIT (dir. Robert Altman, 1974)

🍿 It’s a buddy comedy! Back from when you could still make a good film that was also funny. There’s a real warmth and humanity here and you could probably spend the whole movie watching all the finely observed background characters and speculating about their lives.

🍿 It’s a Christmas film! Decorations are clearly visible throughout though it is never directly mentioned and these dudes definitely aren’t about to go home to their families or anything like that.

🍿 It’s dated! 1970’s American culture is terrifying!! There’s also a very of-its-time portrayal of a trans woman, but it didn’t make me want to go piss on Altman’s grave or anything like that.

Super underrated and easily top ten Christmas film.
