Heating 100ml water with a 2W resistor based element, how close can I get with the well known heat transfer formula?

As it turns out, quite close, I calculated 1.71W which is 16% off 👌🏻🙂

I’m using my as a calibrated supply, so the two multimeters, measuring heating element voltage and current, aren’t really needed. They’re mostly there for display and bling, however doing this experiment with a regular bench supply, you would need them 🙂
Multiplying the two measured values gives a quite satisfying result though, you should try it 😃

I’m done with experiments for now, other exiting things are queued up in my little lab 🙂

I ended up ordering a more suitable , I want to repeat my previous test with better accuracy.

My really is a nice companion when doing things like this, I designed a new resistor heating element meant to run at a higher voltage and I get a precise reading of the power dissipated 👍🏼 Many bench supplies will do this too, but not at the same accuracy.
And accuracy is what I’m looking for in this setup.

The calorimeter was reasonably cheap at Amazon and shipment took 5days including the weekend.

Stay tuned 👌🏻🙂

I built a simple and used it to prove that an arbitrary AC signal will heat a resistor equally compared to a DC signal with the same amplitude as the RMS amplitude of the AC signal 🤓
This a fundamental rule and the reason we universally use RMS to describe any AC signal amplitude: by the end of the day, everything revolves around power transfer.
A funny experiment involving many interesting disciplines: temperature measurement, building a small heating element, basic math/physics and some basic measurement techniques.

Let's see if we can get that beast (H1 SpaCal ECAL) back to life after sitting in an exhibition for 15 years. It looks so beautiful! But it will certainly need some shiny new readout electronics...

I'm a professor for at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology ().

I am interested in searches for and at colliders and beam dumps, and i am recently developing a taste for direct detection experiments as well.

I love for the and for algorithms; with and without .
