The summer solstice is #Greenland's National Day
PILLUARIT!
Slightly unusually, the ablation season (net ice loss from melt) has yet to start in Greenland, surface melt is average for the time of year. Fresh snow is also still adding ice to the #IceSheet.
A start to the surface ablation season after the 21st June has only happened 4 times since 2000 - but was much more common in in the 80s + 90s.
Remember though - #ice is still lost by #calving of #icebergs

The long-anticipated #calving event on #Brunt Ice Shelf finally occurred last week:
#ESA #Copernicus #Sentinel-1#SAR image animation of #BruntIceShelf, #Antarctica, showing the calving of #iceberg #A-81. The size of the iceberg is approximately 1700 km² or roughly equal to the area of Greater London. Combined with the calving of iceberg #A-74 in February 2021, the ice shelf lost 3000 km² in surface area, more than the country of Luxembourg.

Underwater Tsunami Created By Collapse Of Antarctic Glacier’s Front End
The front end of #glaciers in #Antarctica that flow to the coast break apart due to melting, creating #icebergs. These are known as #calving events, and they can have dramatic consequences. Not only are large chunks of ice then free to move and reach lower latitudes, the process can also create powerful “internal #tsunamis” that profoundly alter the #ocean.
