In Leiden for a conference, and my lovely #Fairphone seems to have kicked the bucket. Grateful for their 5 year warranty, less grateful that the response to me running #Calyx was that it was obviously a software bug. They do get points for reevaluating when I pointed out that I did some of the development work for the #lineageos port and seeing about waiving the flashing fee.

The problem is that you have no way of knowing whether that GPS data is going somewhere on the internet, unless you use a packet logger/filter on a computer.

Same applies for regular Android, but many of the FOSS forks (like #Calyx) let you firewall applications from background internet access, or entirely.

Yay finally managed to get music onto my iTelephone.

Opted for Doppler is the end. I wish I could say the process was easy… Had to use iCloud to transfer the files as despite downloading the Nextcloud files, the telephone wasn’t playing ball.

I hate myself.

Main gripe switching from #Calyx to #IOS

Getting apps on #FDroid was a lot more chill. The App Store is more sales and clumsy looking apps. I’m missing the simple #FOSS apps, or at least it feels like a mission tracking them down.

Any folks on a flashed g00gle #Pixel phone running #Calyx about the BS #BatteryIssue?

It's not started saying it has a problem reading the battery meter but I suspect this is a panned obsolescence move rather than an actual fault.

Would a new battery get round this?

If you want to get away from Stock #Android phones, but stay Android, I'd recommend #Calyx devices or OS.

#CalyxOS leverages #MicroG to simulate app connections to #Google, cutting the cord to them.

Not every app will work, but the vast majority do. #Signal is the #SMS app and default phone app, but can call regular non-Signal devices.

Battery life is exceptional, and wow is it fast without all that weight. It also comes with a Firewall to control internet access to apps, so that free calculator app can't download apps. :). Also, it doesn't require the #VPN slot, so you can still use your VPN software.

They have Hotspots to can subscribe to, and since their in their name - #privacy (as long as you don't power them up at your house)

Unfortunately it seems like that, interestingly thou Google makes phones (Pixel phones) with ability to flash alternative OS systems that are #opensource like #Graphene OS, or #Calyx OS.

So maybe they track people that don't care enough about their data, and people who really reeeeally care, will put time, effort, and money into being private by researching what to do for it, and end up buying Pixel phone, and flashing Graphene OS.

I could be wrong. 🤷‍♂️
