Just saw #Babylon at #CampbeltownPictureHouse. It's a monstrous, shambolic excess of a #film that screams into your ears, "I AM A METAPHOR FOR HOLLYWOOD!" As well as being literally about #Hollywood, specifically the transition from silent films to talkies. The ending seems tacked on to allow the surviving character a tearful reminiscence about the power of film, while watching a film in a cinema. But the music is great, and there are some funny, affecting and horrific scenes.

Review of #EmpireOfLight (2022) at #CampbeltownPictureHouse.

Superb film about a middle-aged woman (#OlviaColman) who works at a seaside cinema, holding together a spiritless 'normal' life through medication. This changes when a young Black man (#MichealWard) joins the staff. Their relationship is set against the backdrop of early 1980s racial violence.

The other main actor is the magnificent #ArtDeco cinema, with its own redemptive power.

Review of #M3gan (2022) at #CampbeltownPictureHouse.

Cady, orphaned in a car crash, comes under the guardianship of Aunt Gemma. Gemma is working on a lifesize AI doll designed to bond with a particular child. So M3gan comes home for training with Cady, partly because Gemma has zero parenting skills.

Unfortunately, M3gan takes her mission very seriously, and mayhem ensues. Very enjoyable satire on tech culture and its techbros.

I just saw #AManCalledOtto (2022) at #CampbeltownPictureHouse.

#TomHanks turns in his usual solid performance as Otto Anderson, a curmudgeon who's been badly hurt by the world. So much so that he resolves to kill himself. Fortunately, he's inadvertently thwarted by the needs of his new neighbours, whose ineptitude annoys him so much that he has to help them.

It's predictable, warm-hearted, sentimental, redemptive & very enjoyable. Oh, and there's a cat.

I went to see #TheAmazingMaurice at #CampbeltownPictureHouse this afternoon. There's a group of intelligent rats, a boy called Keith who plays the pipes a bit & a smug talking cat called Maurice. Together they operate a scam on unsuspecting towns, in which the rats show up and are 'charmed' away by Keith, while Maurice takes the money. All wrapped up in an unfolding #TerryPratchett story. So of course it's very clever and funny. You should go and see it.

I just watched one of the weirdest Xmas films I've ever seen, at #CampbeltownPictureHouse. It's a Finnish film from 2010, called Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale. A mining company in #Lapland dig up the original Santa from inside a mountain. Unfortunately, he's a monster, more akin to the #Krampus tradition. The local #Sami families then have to deal with him. Yesterday I went to #CampbeltownPictureHouse to see The Muppets' Christmas Carol (dog-friendly) and Paddington Bear (in Ukrainian). I hadn't seen either film before. The Muppets were fine, though I was disappointed that there only 2 well-behaved dogs there. I wanted a baying pack. Paddington Bear was brilliant, and I loved hearing the Ukrainian, with Vlodomyr Zelenskiy voicing Paddington. #FilmMastodon

A train crash is the starting point for a Tarantinoesque revenge drama, in which a group of social misfits are brought together to exact justice. It combines extreme violence with pitch black, laugh out loud humour and genuinely sweet moments of human understanding. The ending had me crying with happiness. #FilmMastodon
