@SydneyCyclewaysFan @jedsetter @ukuku @ajsadauskas@lemmy.ml @jakecoppinger @cyclingnews @walk_sydney @sydneyurbanismnews Apparently "effectively engaging with the community" at Canada Bay council means sending people a pro-forma letter.
I decided to write them back...
"Dear Shankar, Andrew, Brendan, and all whom this may concern,
"One more thing.
"Just a little heads up about something.
"Next time, before you send everyone who responded to an inquiry with the same pro-forma letter, you might want to check that it hasn't gone viral on social media.
"Because, when there's several Mastodon threads full of people who received the same pro forma letter, it comes across as a little insincere to say you are 'effectively engaging with the community as part of this process'.

Canada Bay Council (Sydney) has completed the destruction of the Heath St cycleway after a misleading traffic report and opposition of local residents.
The bicycle lane resulted in the removal of one parking space and a narrowing of the road. It was paid for by NSW state taxpayers.

Just in: CityHub is reporting Canada Bay Council has backflipped and won't be removing the separated cycleway on Heath Street (Sydney).
> “The council plans to modify (not remove) the section of cycleway at Heath Street,” Canada Bay Council said in a statement.
I currently can't find this statement.
Bear in mind the council previously said they would "modify" the cycleway, when actually meaning they would remove it: https://jakecoppinger.com/2023/03/canada-bay-council-plans-to-remove-heath-st-cycleway-due-to-a-misleading-traffic-report/

Unconfirmed report that Heath St cycleway demolition has been delayed by Canada Bay Council for a week, or possibly the end of the month. As of 8:16am there was no equipment present.
There has been a huge uproar - the Sydney Morning Herald article is number 1 nationally.

@ajsadauskas@lemmy.ml I am absolutely furious that Canada Bay council is going ahead with this act of environmental and infrastructure vandalism.
If you've ever asked why Australia doesn't have great quality cycling infrastructure or transport planning that reflects the realities of net zero by 2050, here's a big part of the reason.
It's car-brained local governments listening to NIMBYs.
"A cycle path built through part of Sydney’s inner west will be ripped up on Tuesday, five months after it was completed, due to a council decision described by riders as a knee-jerk reaction to complaints from residents.
"The separated bike path on Heath Street in the inner west suburb of Rodd Point is part of a planned $7 million cycleway designed to connect the Bay Run at Iron Cove on the banks of the Parramatta River to Concord."
UPDATE: I did some more digging into the local council in Canada Bay, and found this about the mayor:
"The Independent Commission Against Corruption is currently investigating allegations Canada Bay’s long-term mayor Angelo Tsirekas accepted perks from developers, including international flights and accommodation, in return for favourable decisions."

The City of Canada Bay is hosting Sustainable Saturday this weekend! Though bear in mind, they just voted to remove the Heath Street cycleway, against the advice of TfNSW, BicycleNSW and BayBUG..

RT David Martin in #BayBUG FB group (public), re. Heath St cycleway removal: (1/2 in 🧵):
Canada Bay Council on Tuesday night voted to accept Traffic Committee’s recommendation to remove the uphill cycleway in Heath St Five Dock, just installed in August 2022.
Note that TfNSW voted on TC against the recommendation, refuting the arguments put forward (re road width, accessing driveways, sight lines at Heath/Rickard). Transport strongly supported the benefits of the cycleway for bike riders and in slowing motor vehicle traffic on Heath St. Transport "offered design support to assist Council in developing a concept design that balances all user requirements" and that "Council consider deferring the decision on removal of the [cycle] path pending the outcome of a design review conducted in partnership with Council". This offer was repeated in a motion from Cllr Jago(Greens)during consideration of the TC recommendation but did not receive a seconder. (NB Both Labour councillors were absent.)
There were five speakers against TC's recommendation: from BayBUG, Bicycle NSW and the [Mortlake-Cabarita]Peninsula Action Group.
The lack of support from the Mayor (Tsirekas) and the TC chair (Cllr Megna) for anything cycling was palpable. After our first speaker presented, the Mayor asked the rest of us whether we really had anything in addition to say. We all claimed our 5 minutes.

@jakecoppinger The screenshot of Canada Bay Council's proposal is below.
Apparently it thinks painted warnings on the road are a good replacement for a protected bike lane, and is also looking to re-introduce two parking spots.
Full details of Canada Bay city council's plan are on this website: https://collaborate.canadabay.nsw.gov.au/ewcycleway/seg1heathst
The council has requested feedback about the proposal:
"To submit your feedback online please fill in the form below (see the website). Alternatively, you can also provide feedback via email through council@canadabay.nsw.gov.au or by mail to Locked Bag 1470 Drummoyne NSW 1470."
I suggest we take them up on their request, and provide them with feedback.

I wrote a blog post discussing how Canada Bay will be removing the Heath Street separated cycleway, funded by a $7 million grant from the NSW Government.
In this blog post I:
- Show the council is removing the cycleway while claiming to “modify” it.
- Show the council is removing the cycleway due to the third-party report.
- Outline errors and flaws in the engineering report prepared by a third party (which has now been hidden from the Canada Bay Council website).
To support my analysis I conducted a drone aerial imagery survey using a commodity drone (following CASA laws), creating a 3D model and pointcloud to take measurements on, along with capturing #Mapillary imagery and surveying on #openstreetmap

Canada Bay council is planning to remove a separated cycleway on Heath Street: https://collaborate.canadabay.nsw.gov.au/ewcycleway/seg1heathst
Heath Street is a crucial link in a six-part East-West regional cycleway connecting Canada Bay in Sydney’s inner west with the western suburbs. The Heath Street section was enabled by $7 million from the NSW Government.
The council removed the “Design review report” by McLaren Traffic Engineering from their website, which recommends removing the cycleway.
Fortunately, the Wayback Machine indexed the page 30th Jan 23, showing the now removed report on the right sidebar: https://web.archive.org/web/20230130232813/https://collaborate.canadabay.nsw.gov.au/ewcycleway/seg1heathst
The report link itself was not yet archived, but is currently live.
I’ve run the indexer on it so it’s archived for good now: https://web.archive.org/save/https://collaborate.canadabay.nsw.gov.au/download_file/7173/1457
