"Tossed by the Wind," Emily Carr, 1939.

Emily Carr was one of Canada's greatest artists. Early in her career she was famous for her paintings of remote forests and indigenous communities, some of which are still remote. In the early 30s she began more conceptual works around natural subjects, of which this Expressionist canvas is an example.

"Landscape with Cows," Helen McNicoll, 1907.

A Canadian Impressionist, McNicoll helped popularize Impressionism in Canada and became one of the most prominent Canadian artists of the early 20th century. Sadly, she died young, 35 y/o, of diabetes, only 8 years after this was completed.

But what a perfect summer scene!

Small watercolour painting of Chandler House (aka Rocklyn National Historic Site), a stately stone building, built 1831, in Dorchester, New Brunswick, once home to EB Chandler, a Father of Confederation. A sister building stands in Sackville, and served as the residence of the president of Mount Allison University for decades. Today it’s a café.

My first year fine arts sculpture professor, the late Tom Henderson, lived in this house in Aulac, New Brunswick, just a few minutes from the Nova Scotia border and Fort Beauséjour National Historic Site, just off the road to Prince Edward Island. Typical late-19th/early-20th century home around here. Stillman & Birn hardcover sketchbook. 2B Pencil, Carbonpen, Copic markers. 2018.
