This old-fashioned Santa Claus with a toboggan on his back and snowshoes on his feet is drawn from the Christmas 1894 issue of the Montreal Illustrated.

Christmas is a great time to remember that snowshoes and the toboggan were first developed by First Nations peoples. Without these gifts, the first settlers would have struggled even more to overcome Canada’s harsh winters.
