Familiar Grounds is split in 3 chapters - Accident #1, 2 and 3. First one is offscreen severing of a worker's arm at a cardboard box factory Maryse works at. The motif of arm courses throughout the film. Lafleur's connecting visual gags are perhaps the subtlest of them all in cinema and I love it. The second "accident" is a small bird running into Benoit's window. He cooks it for dinner, not realizing that it is too small for 4 people. The third one concerns the man of the future, as he tells Benoit that his sister is going to be in a fatal car accident. He also tells him that it will be a beautiful summer. Wry, affecting and inventive, Lafleur's world has a unique, quiet charm all to itself. These accidents in life are not going to be life changing for these lonely, confused, disconnected people, but they give them a some sense of comfort that whether they know it or not, that we are all somehow connected in this world. #canadiancinema #stephanelafleur

Enigmatic in its beautiful black and white images, Denis Côté's Elle Veut le Chaos tells a slight story of Coralie (Eve Duranceau), who ekes out a living in nowhereland next to a highway near Montreal. Côté seems to have a knack for lightly sketching out these sort of small time outsiders while keeping their mysterious origins intact. Coralie lives with Jacob, an older man/father figure. Their lives seem forever indentured to the violent gang, headed by Alain, next door. Their relationships are never clearly defined. Pierrot (Laurent Lucas), just came out of jail, comes back and tells Coralie that he wants to take her away to his home in France. But that's not what she wants. Cause and effect don't really apply to Côté's films. Violence happens abruptly, motivations hidden and unclear and things turn out unexpectedly. The mood Côté creates is absorbing and has a somewhat otherworldly quality to it. Oh, and fireworks look beautiful in black and white. #canadiancinema #deniscote #bw

Quebecois #OlivierGodin's Les arts de la parole follows the trials & tribulations of detective Koroviev. He is a studious & sensitive fella who teaches poetry in a brigade of police poets. He is put on the duty of keeping taps on Clemént, a bank robber. Soon he is out w/Clemént at a jazz club. W/ its droll humor & painterly framing & dissolves, it strongly resembles '80s Godard. Add the genre elements & full of quirky characters, you got a charming, entertaining film. #quebec #canadiancinema
