“But even as many of our communities have houses that are remembered as enslaved spaces, like Ross-Thomson House, it is my impression that this is where (for many of us) our curiosity ends. There is a simultaneous impulse to remember shackles in the cellar and to distance ourselves from their implications.” Erin Isaac explores the implications of talking about slavery in Shelburne, Nova Scotia for . earlycanadianhistory.ca/2023/0

"Mourning the invasion of the squad who arrested the , who were his guests, Elder Bill Jones said, 'We are at the end times of our great forests.'

"Abolish C-IRG said, 'Due to the increasing amount of -led anti-resource extraction movements in British Columbia, the Community-Industry Response Group was born. C-IRG is unique to British Columbia. They are militarized, have no budget limit, and the officers get paid handsomely to force , , , and through unceded , without consent. This is just another extension of the ’s original task- to remove and separate people from the land and enforce . They do not keep us safe, they protect ."

Background: Back to Fairy Creek

"The last time the world was watching Fairy Creek, we witnessed the largest act of in . Well over 1,000 Indigenous and non-Indigenous forest defenders were arrested by the RCMP over months of tense standoffs in 2021 as sought to halt the logging of rare .

"The courts hammered that movement, with charges and bail conditions keeping many away, and the tussle in the trees went dormant for most of the last two years.

"Until now.

"A new blockade, led by and supported by non-Indigenous allies, has just been erected on a key bridge crossing an arterial logging road. The RCMP's specialized tactical team that responds to land defence actions is present and surveilling the camp. A raid could come any day, and having on the ground is of crucial importance to keep tabs on police and document the latest developments as land defenders seek to protect their unceded territories from old-growth logging."

/me compiles a short list for the shitlibs chiming in that we should:

🇨🇦 🇨🇦 🇨🇦 🇨🇦
"Let Canadians do what they have done historically, and we'll do the right thing."
🇨🇦 🇨🇦 🇨🇦 🇨🇦

(If you're a shitlib, you might want to run now and stick your head in the sand. This isn't going to be pretty. )

🇨🇦 Residential schools
May as well kick this list of Canadian atrocities with the big one.

Over the course of the system's more than hundred-year existence, around 150,000 children were placed in residential schools nationally.

"The number of school-related deaths remains unknown due to incomplete records. Estimates range from 3,200 to over 30,000, mostly from disease.["
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadi

🇨🇦 "None is too many"
Only 5,000 Jewish refugees entered Canada from 1933 until 1945, which the book of this name argues was the worst of any refugee receiving nation in the world.
thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/

🇨🇦 A haven for Nazis and collaborators
Canada supposedly stripped eight of their citizenships but never actually deported them.
m.jpost.com/opinion/canada-fai

🇨🇦 Somalia Affair
Shidane Arone, a Somali teenager, was beaten to death by two Canadian soldiers participating in "humanitarian efforts" in Somalia.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somali

🇨🇦 Komagata Maru
Yeah, I can't even sort through the number of legislation changes that resulted in 22 people being shot dead as a result of this bullshit.
thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/

🇨🇦 Korean War Crimes
"In investigating the Shin case the author uncovered numerous other war crimes committed by Canadian forces in Korea, including rape and murder. In almost all cases where the perpetrators faced court-martials, they were found guilty but then exonerated upon return to Canada."
apjjf.org/2012/10/3/John-Price

🇨🇦 Asbestos ⬅️ 2017!!
Trying to prevent other countries from banning asbestos
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/

Do you need me to go on? Because I can go on.

This is usually the point at which some shitlib suddenly declares, "But at least we didn't have slavery." Ha!

humanrights.ca/story/story-bla

Still think we should leave it to Canadians to "do the right thing"?

Craig Baird, a Canadian historian, @CraigBaird on the bird site has been creating AI versions of prime ministers, provincial premiers and historical figures to boost an interest in our history.

Here is a steampunk image of Elsie MacGill.

Elsie MacGill was the 1st woman in the world to earn an aeronautical engineering degree & the 1st woman in Canada with an electrical engineering degree.
She also oversaw the construction of 1,400 Hawker Hurricanes during WW2.

Had a really good discussion with my 6th grade students in Social Studies. We've been talking about the ways cultures can deal with each other when they meet. We defined the terms:

· Pluralism/integration
· Annihilation
· Segregation
· Assimilation

We all agreed that integration was the best possible response, but when I asked what the second-best was, we had an excellent talk about the down sides of each of the others.
