My grandma Sadie (z''l) used to sing this when we played Canasta and she picked up the pile: "You had your way, and now you must pay -- I'm glad that you're sorry now!"

(When someone else picked up the pile she'd sing, "You took the part that once was my heart, so why not take all of me!" The melody for both of these refrains is almost the same.)

I was at a friend’s game night and heard someone speaking about #Canasta in a thick Brazilian accent. Long story short, I have a play date with him and his parents when they visit in August 😄

They play a version that allows for sequences as well as sets. And they don’t freeze the pile. Maybe #Samba or another variant.

I don't actually do any scientific programming. Most of my time is spent handing the financial and backoffice applications that keep the institute running.

I have a M.Sc. in #maths and I use it very successfully at #bridge, #canasta, and #Monopoly. For some reason, I have never managed to become ANY good at #chess. But I have lots of hubris, I mean – pride, so I re-downloaded an app I bought 15 or so years ago and… uh… I seem to have forgotten the rules completely 😬 even the "are you sure you have a brain cell?" level got me stuck. After three moves.

Becoming a chess master might take a while…
