Now - 1st salted fish built in & used as sort station after cannery closed.
in 1862 by Mack & Neill. It targeted fish, specifically . Seasonal processing employed many Indigenous people. At about the same time, a Christian mission/school which had been established at Fort Rupert moved to Alert Bay to minister to the Indigenous population which was moving to the island to work in the cannery.
